Job Details

We are seeking to appoint a talented individual to undertake applied epidemiological investigations into the aetiology of Alzheimer’s disease at the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit (IEU) at the University of Bristol.

The appointee will contribute to a project funded by BRACE charity (http://www.alzheimers-brace.org/) to identify early determinants and causal environmental risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease. A major focus of the project will be investigating the genetic overlap between Alzheimer’s disease and other diseases or traits, using polygenic risk scores and genetic variants for inferring causality. The appointee will be applying polygenic risk score analyses and Mendelian randomization analyses, in particular newly developed two-sample Mendelian randomization approaches, utilizing large-scale publicly available datasets (such as such as summary statistics from the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP)) as well as in-house data (such as the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, www.bris.ac.uk/alspac) cohort. The appointee will work collaboratively with many researchers across the Unit and with external collaborators. There may also be opportunities to visit and spend time at collaborating centres.

The IEU consists of six research programmes encompassing causal modeling, genetic and epigenetic epidemiology. Professor George Davey Smith is director of the IEU and runs programme 1, on Mendelian randomization. Dr Evie Stergiakouli’s research is focused on this programme. One of the benefits of this position will be access to all the programme and theme leads (Relton, Lawlor, Tilling, Timpson, Evans, Munafo, Gaunt) within the IEU as a member of the Unit working across its multiple cross cutting themes (which include bioinformatics). The successful individual will have the opportunity to maximize the use of local study resources along with local research capacity/infrastructure (for example the University of Bristol super computer – BLUECRYSTAL/BLUEPETA). The successful applicant will also be encouraged to develop their own personal research portfolio.

The appointment will be full-time on Grade I or J, depending on the extent of previous relevant research experience, and is offered as an open ended contract. Funding is initially available until the end of November 2017, with the possibility to extend this further if more funding becomes available. The post is ideally suited to someone with a PhD in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics or a closely related discipline.

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Evie Stergiakouli e.stergiakouli@bristol.ac.uk
