RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will provide a high level X-ray Crystallography service to the Department of Chemistry, to other University Departments and to the scientific community at large. The position involves the maintenance, administration, operation of the XRD instruments, and training and supporting the day to day activities of the XRD facility. The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Operating and maintaining the XRD instruments and cryo-systems, and ensuring the safe operation and security of the facility;
- Aligning and calibrating all instrumentation on a regular basis in order to ensure continuous accurate analysis;
- Collecting single crystal X-ray data and interpreting the results;
- Full crystal and molecular structure determinations and refinements and contributions to publications as co-author, where required;
- Collecting powder X-ray diffraction data and interpreting the results.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- MSc degree in Chemistry, specialising in Chemical Crystallography;
- Experience in single crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction including operation of the XRD instrumentation.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Appropriate language and communication skills;
- Organisational skills;
- Computer literacy (MS Windows) and crystallographic software;
- Publication writing skills;
- Knowledge of general laboratory safety rules;
- Interpersonal and problem solving skills.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- PhD degree in Chemistry, specialising in Chemical Crystallography;
- Laboratory management experience in an academic environment.

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 397 288 to R 490 707 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
