PhD Supervisor: Peter Roach Co supervisor: Mathieu Baud
Interviews will be held in December.
PhD Description:
One important mechanism of antibiotic resistance is bacterial control of antibiotic accumulation within the cell. This can be achieved by modification of the bacterial envelope, decreasing porin production or increasing the expression of efflux pump systems, which confers a Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) phenotype. Regulation of efflux pump expression and activity has been demonstrated to be the basis of the MDR phenotype in some human pathogens. In this project, we will develop a fundamental understanding of the regulation of antibiotic efflux pumps, which will reveal the potential to develop inhibitors of efflux. The project will provide the successful applicant with experience of a wide range of biochemical methods, potentially including molecular biology, protein expression, assay development, biophysical analysis and crystallography. We seek an enthusiastic graduate in chemistry or biochemistry with good practical skills. The project will be conducted in collaboration with DSTL (Defence Science and Technology Laboratory), Porton Down
The project is funded for 3 years and welcomes applicants from the UK and EU who have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or allied subjects/relevant disciplines. Funding will cover fees and a stipend at current research council rates of £ 14,296 per annum.
Due to funding restrictions this position is only open to UK/EU applicants
Applications for a PhD in Chemistry should be submitted online at https://studentrecords.soton.ac.uk/BNNRPROD/bzsksrch.P_Login?pos=7189&majr;=7189&term;=201617#_ga=1.62399855.2120898106.1412059827
