LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER: WELDING ENGINEERING (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Playing an active role as academic leader in the discipline of Welding Engineering at a national level;
  • Marketing and growing the Welding Engineering programme with the emphasis on growth at graduate level;
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Physical Metallurgy and related disciplines;
  • Research and the sustained delivery of research outputs;
  • Establishing, participating in and supervising research programmes in Welding Engineering, including obtaining research funding;
  • Participating in departmental administration and marketing activities;
  • Participating in the preparation, development and presentation of continued education programmes for the industry.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer:

  • A master’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering;
  • A proven research and publication record;
  • A lecturer will be expected to start research towards a PhD within the first six months of appointment.

Senior Lecturer:

  • A PhD in Metallurgical Engineering;
  • Academic status in the field of Welding Engineering and/or Physical Metallurgy;
  • A proven research and publication record.
  • Industrial or consulting experience in the stated area;
  • Evidence of supervision of Master’s and/or Doctoral students.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Leadership and communication skills;
  • An exceptional research record in the research specialisation field of Welding Engineering and Physical Metallurgy. Specifically, the research focus area of the Welding Engineering Group is the welding of aged and service degraded pressure-bearing equipment, and relevant research and demonstrated research excellence in this area will be a strong motivation.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
