An exciting permanent opportunity exists for a motivated and experienced Application Engineer – a role commonly known in the industry as Dev Ops - to join our dynamic team at ITS at the University of Auckland. The Application Engineering team supports a wide range set of application and infrastructure components, including web technologies, load-balancing solutions, and authentication and identity management systems.  It also provides disciplined production engineering services for in-house developed applications, and undertakes ad hoc development projects in diverse technologies as required. 

In this role your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the day-to-day technical and administrative operations of the Application Engineering Team.
  • Delivering point solutions to business problems, both through development of custom solutions, and deployment of third party products.
  • Managing and update comprehensively updating all assigned incidents and service requests within the issue service management system.
  • Lifecycle support for University Applications, including deployment, documentation, troubleshooting, patching, re-platforming and decommissioning.
  • Vendor liaison with major suppliers/partners, to plan changes and escalate issues.
  • Developing and maintaining knowledge around current and planned developments within the application end-to-end infrastructure.
  • Contribution to the 24x7 support roster for the ITS Application Engineering Team.

 

To be successful in this role you will need to have:

  • 5 years’ experience within the IT industry, with a minimum of 2-3 years Unix and Microsoft software support experience.
  • Experience in large IT Infrastructure environments
  • Good knowledge of Java or another similar language
  • Good understanding of web and middleware technologies
  • Knowledge of SQL (Oracle/MySQL/MS SQL), query debugging and client connection mechanisms
  • An understanding of ITIL or other standards-based Service Management frameworks
  • An understanding of Unix & Microsoft systems, network, and file security
  • Working knowledge of network topologies, protocols and technologies including DHCP, DNS and firewalls
  • Experience supporting and tuning applications in large organizations
  • Excellent trouble-shooting skills and application debugging experience
  • Practical understanding of development lifecycle and development methodologies
  • Relevant IT industry or tertiary qualifications preferred
  • Excellent documentation and oral communication skills
  • A strong work ethic and able to work well under pressure.
  • A sound understanding of Change Control processes and their use in a large IT environment
  • The ability to identify and satisfy customer requirements.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a wider team to achieve targets and meet objectives.
