Job Details

Details

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD position in physics and devices of 2D materials. Photonic applications and novel optical phenomena will be targeted in this new materials system. The first task will be to assemble novel heterostructures in a Lego-style using atomic monolayers of various semiconductors, insulators, ferromagnetics and metals. The second task is to place these heterostructures in an optical microcavity, and observe and manipulate part-light-part-matter exciton-polariton states that arise when light strongly interacts with the materials embedded in the photonic structure.

The successful candidate will join the 2D Materials group of 4 PhD students and 2 postdocs, and will be trained to use a modern semiconductor clean room and the state-of-the-art optical laboratories in Sheffield. We enjoy a range of collaborations across different Departments in Sheffield, as well as participate in many national and international projects. The new student will be fully involved in these activities.

Applicants for this post are expected to have completed a Masters course in solid state physics or related discipline.

The position is open for EU and UK applicants only. 3 and 4 year PhD programme options are available (please get in touch to discuss). Applications are accepted any time before the closing date of 28th of February 2017. However, interviews with strong candidates will be arranged as soon as a sufficient number of applicants have applied and can take place as early as December 2016. PhD start date is September or October 2017.
