CLINICAL ASSISTANT: VETERINARY PATHOLOGY (THREE-YEAR CONTRACT APPOINTMENT)

INTRODUCTION:

Applications are invited for the position of Clinical Assistant (Resident). This post is targeted at veterinarians who wish to specialise in Pathology, with an emphasis on crocodile diseases. The successful applicant will join a team of qualified specialists working in a well-equipped academic environment in the discipline of Pathology.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Registering and pursuing a MMedVet (Path) degree;
  • Participating in the diagnostic services provided by the Pathology Section;
  • Participating in the crocodile consultancy services of the Pathology Section, where applicable;
  • Assisting with diagnostic training of undergraduate students;
  • Participating in departmental research programmes and publications relevant to crocodiles;
  • Contributing to the continuing education activities;
  • Any other reasonable duties as delegated by the Exotic Leather Research Centre, Section Head or Head of Department.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A BVSc/BVMCh or equivalent degree;
  • Registered as a veterinarian with the South African Veterinary Council;
  • An average of at least 60% in Pathology during undergraduate veterinary training and/or at honours-level.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Compliance with entry requirements for a masters’ programme with a commitment to enrol for an MMedVet degree;
  • Computer literacy (Windows, MS Office, internet);
  • Out-of-hours availability for rotational diagnostic services;
  • Good language and communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team (relate to students, colleagues and supervisors).

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Exposure to diagnostic pathology;
  • Evidence of specific interest in veterinary pathology of crocodilians;
  • Research experience;
  • Experience and/or appropriate postgraduate training in Pathology. 

 

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
