Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Education) in Digital Media

JOB PURPOSE:

To teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to contribute to School administration/outreach activity. To contribute with
scholarship and/or research in a related area of expertise.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:
1. Design and deliver teaching and assessment activities within area of specialism including lectures, setting/marking coursework,
practice workshops, and fieldwork to undergraduates and postgraduates.
2. Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria
and provide constructive feedback to students.
3. Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
4. Oversee research students as directed by Head of School.
5. Supervise practice work where it is part of the course, and advise students on techniques.
6. Plan and develop independent teaching contributions and contribute to the design or revision of course units.
7. Develop appropriate teaching approaches and contribute to curriculum development.

Scholarly Activity:
1. Lecturer Education
- Develop and plan an area of scholarship and expertise in the field of Digital/immersive/interactive media and contribute to the
education portfolio of the School.
- Contribute to and publish scholarship in appropriate refereed journals and conferences.
- Direct, coach and develop students within specialist area.
- Collaborate on original scholarship with colleagues in other institutions including those of strategic importance to Queen’s.
- Support colleagues and students on developing digital media for on-going research projects.

2. Lecturer
- Develop and plan an area of research/scholarship and expertise in the field of Digital/Immersive/Interactive media and
contribute to the research output of the School of Arts, English and Languages.
- Contribute to and publish research/scholarship in appropriate refereed journals and conferences.
- Seek external funding, in collaboration with peers, from relevant funding bodies to ensure continued growth of the School’s
research profile locally and internationally.
- Direct, coach and develop students within specialist area.
- Collaborate on original scholarship with colleagues in other institutions including those of strategic importance to the various
research areas in the School of Arts, English and Languages.
- Support colleagues and students in developing and designing and on-going research projects and applications.

Administration/Contribution to the Community:

1. Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy by developing external links.
2. Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
3. Carry out designated routine School administrative duties, including, for example, committee work, course administration etc.
4. Be responsible for the record–keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials.

Planning and Organising:

1. Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School/mentor.
2. Design/update modules in line with School’s education strategy.
3. Plan and prepare scholarly outputs to meet deadlines.
4. Prepare proposals for submission for external funding.
5. Plan and deliver educational events.

Resource Management Responsibilities:

1. Use teaching and research resources, laboratories and workshops as required.
2. Co-manage, where appropriate, with grant holder external funding relating to research project.
3. Act as mentor for students.

Internal and External Relationships:

1. Be a member of the School Board and Examination Board and such committees as relevant to administrative duties.
2. Collaborate with other staff within School.
3. Develop links or join external networks to share information and ideas.
4. Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries, broadcasters etc.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. At least a 2.1 honours degree in a relevant field.
2. You will normally have or be about to obtain a PhD (at or near completion will be considered, if viva date has been set). Your
PhD should be in one or more of the following areas: Digital Media, Digital Art, Design of Interactive Media, Creative use of
Immersive Technologies, or other relevant fields.
3. A record of high quality practice-based research (Lecturer) or equivalent professional experience (Lecturer Education)
appropriate to stage of career.
4. Research (Lecturer) or Scholarship (Lecturer Education) interests that are sustainable and which complement or enhance activities of the School.
5. A minimum of 3 years experience in one or more of the following areas: digital media, digital design, digital humanities, online
content delivery, interactive or web native documentary, VR/AR, immersive audio, gaming or other immersive media.
6. Teaching experience at tertiary level appropriate to stage of career.
7. Ability to contribute to broader management and administrative processes.
8. High level of analytical capability.
9. Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
10. Effective interpersonal skills.
11. Engagement in continuous professional development.
12. Ability to assess and organise resources.
13. Ability to work outside normal working hours to attend concerts and related events.
14. Ability to contribute to Research Excellence Framework (as Lecturer only).

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. PGCHET and/or membership of an appropriate professional and/or teaching body eg. HEA.
2. Peer-reviewed research or scholarly publications in relevant fields.
3. Interdisciplinary experience.
4. Software design or programming skills in languages such as HTML5 CSS, JavaScript, Arduino, Processing, or similar.
5. Interest in knowledge transfer and outreach activities leading to impact outside academia.
6. Evidence of a design development and online content production role in large-scale research projects.
7. Experience in course design and programme administration.
8. Experience of teaching topics such as interactive documentary, VR/AR, broadcast production, immersive media and digital or
disruptive technologies for broadcast.
9. Experience in international event organisation.
10. Evidence of national or international level professional practice based outputs as content facilitator or creator in relation to
