The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute is a public institution with the mandate to contribute to the improvement of the health of populations internationally and nationally through excellence in research, services, and teaching and training.

The Tuberculosis Research Unit at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is looking for an individual to join the team as Student Assistant (~25%)

The Tuberculosis Research Unit focuses on the cause and consequence of genetic diversity in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes human tuberculosis. The candidate will therefore work under the supervision of senior scientists within the group providing support with the management and analysis of genomics data.

The aim of the job is to contribute to:

  • Maintaining and update database: data cleaning and entering new data.
  • Maintaining and update the python genomic analysis pipeline.

 

The candidate should have some knowledge of the programming language python and knowledge of database management. The individual will be expected to interface with the IT departments at the Swiss TPH and the University of Basel, as well as external data systems. Excellent command (speaking and writing) of English is required.

Biology or computer science students from the University of Basel with or without a degree are entitled to apply. The job duration is six months starting beginning of January 2017.

The number of hours to be worked is 10 hours per week, up to about 43 hours per month. The monthly gross salary for a student assistant without a degree is CHF 1095.85, plus any possible family allowances. For a student assistant with a degree the monthly gross salary will be CHF 1,213.85, plus any possible family allowances.
