JOB PURPOSE:
  • To undertake research in line with the research strategy and targets of the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer
  • Science (EEECS), the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences (EPS) and Queen’s University vision for world class leadership in the pursuit of excellence, with impact on society.
  • To contribute broadly to undergraduate and postgraduate education in EEECS, by teaching a broad range of subjects in Computer
  • Science, and/or Electrical Engineering, and/or Electronics Engineering, and contributing to the continuous improvement of curriculum
  • content, delivery, and assessment methods.
  • To demonstrate leadership by undertaking or contributing to major initiatives to improve research income; improve undergraduate and
  • postgraduate student experience; improve international student intake.
  • To contribute to management and administrative processes of EEECS, at a level commensurate with career stage.


MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:

  • Sustain an excellent standard of teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Undertake efforts to improve of all aspects of undergraduate and postgraduate student experience, including guidance, assessment, feedback, and employability.
  • Contribute to the continuous development of the EEECS curriculum and its alignment with research developments in the field of study and industry needs.
  • Contribute to the accreditation of curriculum by working with appropriate external bodies.
  • Contribute to the development of new, market-attuned postgraduate taught programmes.
  • Improve postgraduate research student recruitment at the national and international level.
  • Improve postgraduate research student experience.


Research:

  • Publish top quality research outputs in the leading international journals and conferences in the field of study, with volume commensurate with career stage.
  • Achieve strong academic impact evidenced with strong citation indices, or other indicators of use of research artefacts from broad academic or industrial research communities.
  • Secure research income to from competitive external sources as Principal Investigator, at a level commensurate with career stage.
  • Build, supervise and sustain a sizeable research group of post-graduate students, research assistants and post-doctoral research fellows, with appropriate critical mass to establish international leadership in the field of study.
  • Develop knowledge transfer and commercial development activities to achieve broader societal and economic impact.
  • Develop strategic research partnerships with industry, with a view to contribute to industry roadmaps.
  • Develop networks of research excellence both nationally and internationally. Build a quality research profile that will secure measures of esteem commensurate with career stage, including research prizes, awards, major research society fellowships, participation in expert panels, keynote talks, and major chairing or program committee roles in international conferences. Administration/Contribution to the Community: Undertake or participate in significant initiatives to influence the strategic directions of EEECS in research, education and societal impact.
  • Contribute effectively to School Faculty or University Committees.
  • Contribute to improving the international profile of EEECS.
  • Contribute to mentoring and career development of fellow academic and research staff members at a level commensurate with career stage.
  • Contribute to major EEECS initiatives to advance equality and diversity and address gender gap, such as Athena Swan and Investors in People.
  • Contribute to community outreach activities, particularly to attract more students from diverse backgrounds in STEM education.

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, or related area.
  • (Candidates who are about to receive a PhD in one of these areas may apply for a Lectureship, by providing evidence of passing their PhD exam.)
  • Significant academic research leadership (or leadership potential) in automation and intelligent manufacturing as evidenced by verifiable involvement in the generation of milestone papers in leading journals, noteworthy demonstrators or internationally leading capability or major funding initiatives.
  • Application of theoretical aspects of automation and intelligent manufacturing through to practical realisation with a view to demonstrating its impact and application potential for future economic and / or societal benefit.
  • Evidence of independent contribution in research projects and outputs and potential to establish an independent research program.
  • A strong track record of research income earned via competitive means of funding as Principal Investigators (for candidates at the Senior Lecturer or Reader grade), or evidence of potential to secure research income (for candidates at the Lecturer grade).
  • Ability to form and manage a sizeable research group, including a track record of post-graduate student and post-doctoral staff supervision (for candidates at the Senior Lecturer or Reader Grade).
  • Teaching experience commensurate with career stage , including undergraduate or postgraduate teaching, project supervision, assessment and feedback experience. (Candidates at the grade of Lecturer should demonstrate experience in direct contact teaching or substantial teaching assistantship, including student assessment, feedback, or supervision responsibilities.)
  • A record of collaboration with and links to industry, or other activities aiming at achieving broader societal and economic impact.
  • For candidates at the grade of Senior Lecturer, or Reader, a strong track record of leadership, demonstrated as evidence of major initiatives that significantly improved education, research or administrative processes. Candidates are required to provide a research statement (no more than 500 words) to highlight the relevance of your research to the post, and a teaching statement (no more than 250 words) to indicate your teaching experience and teaching interests in
  • Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or cross-cutting areas.

 

 

 


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Membership of Fellowship in professional societies such as ACM, IEEE, IET, BCS.
  • Strong academic impact indicators, such as citation indices in Scopus or Google Scholar.
  • Prestigious individual fellowships awarded nationally or internationally (e.g. Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Society,
  • EPSRC ERC, Marie Curie), or other individual awards in recognition of excellence in research.
  • Measures of esteem such as membership in editorial boards, panels, or significant conference service.
  • Evidence of active international research collaboration or participation in international research networks.
  • Strong teaching evaluations or peer reviews of teaching.
  • Undertaking of major initiatives in Computer Science or Electrical and Electronics Engineering education, including but not limited to the establishment of new programs, new methods of delivery, or new methods of assessment and feedback.
  • Leadership in Electrical and Electronics Engineering or Computer Science education, including but not limited to establishment of new modules and programs, new modes of delivery, or new methods of assessment and feedback.
  • Teaching awards.
  • Measurable societal and economic impact, in particular contribution to industry roadmaps and technology transfer to industry, with associated evidence. Evidence of outreach activities.
