Job Details

Location: Bristol, UK

The University of Bristol seeks to appoint a Henry Overton Wills Professor of Greek by 1 September 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.  Appointment to this Chair offers a rare opportunity for a person with vision and energy to provide academic leadership within a world-ranking Department, and to play a key role in the ongoing development of the School of Humanities, the Faculty of Arts and the University.

Classics and Ancient History has been at the centre of the University of Bristol since its foundation in 1909. The Department enjoys an outstanding international reputation in research and teaching. In every national assessment of research to date it has achieved high ratings, and is known for innovative approaches to the subject as well as for engaged work on essential disciplinary skills. It enjoys extensive demand from able applicants for admission to its undergraduate programmes, and hosts a thriving postgraduate community. The Henry Overton Wills Chair of Greek has a distinguished history; previous occupants include Nicholas Hammond, Geoffrey Kirk, John Gould and Robert Fowler (all FBAs).

The successful candidate will have established an international reputation in research and publication, and will show the potential to maintain and further enhance this reputation. She or he will have experience in academic leadership, and a strong understanding of the current research environments in the UK and internationally. The University welcomes applicants with specialisation in Greek language, literature, or culture, and its continued importance for the modern world.
