Job Details

Location: Bristol, UK

The University of Bristol seeks to appoint a Reader/Chair in Environmental History by 1 September 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. Appointment to this position offers a rare opportunity for a person with vision and energy to provide academic leadership within an internationally significant research group that has a strong track record of securing research funding, involvement in multi-institutional projects, and collaboration with external partners. The appointee will also have the opportunity to play a key role in the ongoing development of the School of Humanities, the Faculty of Arts and the University.

Our History Department is known for its research-led teaching and innovative approaches to impact and engagement, as well as for traditional research strengths. It enjoys extensive demand for its popular undergraduate programmes, and hosts a thriving postgraduate community. Environmental History is one of the Department’s key areas of strength, with a core team of five members of staff.

The successful candidate will have established an international reputation in research and publication, and will show the potential to maintain and further enhance this reputation. She or he will have experience in academic leadership, and a strong understanding of the current research environments in the UK and internationally. The University welcomes applicants from any specialisation and temporal focus within the broad field of environmental history, but the appointment panel may display a preference for an applicant with a specialisation in global environmental history.

For more information on the Department of History, see http://www.bris.ac.uk/history/

For informal enquiries, please contact Professor Josie McLellan at josie.mclellan@bristol.ac.uk

The selection process is provisionally scheduled to take place between late January/end of March 2017.

The closing date for applications is 11.59pm on Sunday 18th December 2016.
