REGISTRAR

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent in this senior position at the University of Pretoria will, among other things, assume overall management responsibility for the following core functions, each of which has a unique structure and set of requirements:

  • Corporate legal services (including acting as University Counsel);
  • Governance (including statutory responsibility as Secretary of Council, Senate and the Institutional Forum);
  • Compliance;
  • Internal audit function;
  • Information governance.


In addition, the Vice Chancellor and Principal may delegate management responsibility for other operational areas.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

The minimum requirements include:

  • A legal qualification such as an LLB;
  • A doctorate in a relevant field;
  • Admittance as an advocate or attorney.


The candidate’s applicable legal skills should be supplemented by extensive experience in the higher education sector, which should include knowledge of policy issues, applicable legislation, as well as challenges faced by the sector.

Experience in a senior management and leadership position in the academic and/or academic support services environment or another relevant area (which should be sufficient for performing the activities related to the position of Registrar) is also required.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • The ability to interpret/implement relevant academic policy;
  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills, with demonstrated ability to manage staff and maintain a positive working environment;
  • An understanding of campus-wide technology initiatives;
  • Critical and independent thinking with the capacity to identify problems and implement solutions;
  • Good language and communication skills (oral and written).

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

Strong recommendations include the following:

  • Experience in:
    • Corporate governance and control;
    • Internal audit and risk management;
  • Experience within a leading public institution of national and/or international standing;
  • Working with academic structures such as faculties and schools in a university environment.

The appointment is a full-time, fixed-term contract for five years. In accordance with the performance management system of the University, the incumbent will be evaluated continuously in terms of agreed performance objectives.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
