Job Purpose

The Teaching Support Manager will be responsible for managing a group of teaching technical staff alongside the Head of Scientific Facilities and Technical Support. They will be responsible providing support to practical based teaching within the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, to include conducting and managing Performance and Development Reviews and Staff Development programmes.

The post holder will manage the running of class practicals and the utilisation of the teaching support staff and teaching facilities across the College, the purpose being to enable more effective utilisation of teaching support technical staff, facilities and equipment of the College. They will be required to advise academic staff on practical based teaching in terms of feasibility to mount large based practical experiments in terms of costing, equipment, space and Health and Safety and to manage timetables and enabling time slots to correspond with the University wide timetable.

Development of and strategic planning for current and future requirements within the College teaching facilities with the Head of Scientific Facilities and Technical support would be a requirement. The post holder would also be required to attend the Teaching and Learning committee and work with external bodies to generate additional income for the College by hiring Teaching service facilities and technical support.

Person Specification

  • • Have a degree in a life science subject or equivalent.
  • • High level of expertise in all aspects of teaching laboratory support and health and safety management.
  • • Good communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to alter management and communication style to match the target audience providing a high level of leadership.
  • • Significant management experience demonstrating a high level of strategic thinking to plan and implement both medium and long term changes to structures and services.
  • • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • • Registered Science technician status or willingness to work towards registration
  • • Specialist knowledge of laboratory safety and safety legislation.
  • • Ability to incorporate Risk Management across a full range of activities
