A Marie Curie Research Fellow is required to work on the understanding of carbon fibre composite degradation under the (non-linear) effects of lightning strike. This will involve the development of coupled electro-thermal models to describe the degradation process and to allow enhancement of engineering design capabilities by increasing understanding of the design criteria that limit the degradation effects of a direct lightning strike on a CFC wind turbine blade.
Ideally you will have an excellent first degree in either Physics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and wish to register for PhD studies. This post is funded under the ERC Marie Curie-Sklodowska Innovative Training Network Programme and has the added requirement that appointees must not have spent more than 12 months in the UK over the last 3 years.
The project instigates expertise development in mathematical modelling of complex phenomena, numerical algorithms and their software implementations, experimental validation and visualization of modelling results. A person employed on this project will be involved in the university research as well as industrial developments of new products. It gives a unique opportunity to develop a very wide range of skills with career prospects in both industry and academia. The prospective jobs include high technology companies from the aerospace, electric power networks and wind power industries. Others jobs are in composites materials sector and academia.
