JOB PURPOSE:

The post will contribute significantly to the development and delivery of the School’s strategic and operational research, education
and internationalisation objectives and the management of financial, human, administrative and physical resources within the School.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Contribute to the development and delivery of School Plans and Faculty Plans.
2. Manage information systems in the School, ensuring the availability of high quality and timely information on all of the School’s activities.
3. Lead or participate in Working Groups and Project Teams planning and implementing changes in line with School Plans and Faculty Plans.
4. Support the Head of School and Director of Research to manage operational requirements in relation to research activity
including: REF planning, research targets, internationalisation, research seminars, inter-disciplinary developments and activities,
and appropriate support for research grant holders.
5. Support the Head of School and Directors of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Education in managing the operational
requirements relating to: student recruitment, admissions and enrolment, timetabling, undergraduate and postgraduate
administration, programme organisation and management, new programmes and changes to programmes/modules,
examinations, quality assurance processes, internationalisation and (where appropriate) Professional Accreditation.
6. Support the Head of School in overseeing the School budget allocation, and ensuring the School operates within allocated
budgets and in line with the University’s Financial and Purchasing Procedures, and providing reports for reviewing the financial
health and operations of the School.
7. Work closely with other School Managers and staff in the Faculty Office to facilitate and support interdisciplinary work across the
Faculty, in terms of new modules and programmes, as well as broader education and research initiatives.
8. Develop, implement and review School-based processes and policies relating to Faculty and University policies.
9. Manage School clerical and support staff, including recruitment, allocation of duties, and maintenance of professional standards,
appraisal, staff training and discipline in line with Faculty and University procedures.
10. Develop and manage systems for the identification of needs relating to the School’s accommodation, equipment and Information Technology.
11. Participate in School Management Board, School Committees, Faculty Managers’ Forum, Working Groups and Project Teams.
12. Participate in University-wide projects through working groups and membership of committees.

Planning and Organising:

1. Assist the Head of School in developing plans for the School in line with Faculty Plans and Vision 2020.
2. Prepare planning statistics to inform School plans, especially around Education and Research.
3. Provide leadership to School support staff/teams, plan projects and prioritise workloads.
4. Manage devolved budgets on behalf of Head of School and make resource recommendations for the School.
5. Support the Head of School in the effective management of the School workload allocation model.
6. Plan and manage own workload.

Resource Management Responsibilities: 

1. People – Line management responsibility for support staff within the School.
2. Finance – Manage resources and delegated School budgets to ensure maximum value is delivered for resources deployed.

Internal and External Relationships:

1. Collaborate with internal (School and Faculty-wide) colleagues on research, education and administrative matters.
2. Communicate/negotiate with other areas of the University to ensure successful delivery of service.
3. Participate in School, Faculty and University committees.
4. Represent the School at University level on a regular basis and build positive relationships.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. Degree.
2. Five years relevant experience.
3. Proven analytical and organisational capability across a range of management functions.
4. Ability to develop and implement change.
5. Ability to take lead role and responsibility for a major project.
6. Experience of financial planning and managing budgets.
7. Experience of managing diverse teams and ability to gain the support of colleagues.
8. Good knowledge of University procedures and regulations in the Higher Education sector.
9. Ability to think strategically as well as focus on operational details.
10. Ability to deliver results against tight deadlines.
11. High Level of oral and written communication.
12. Communication, interpersonal and time-management skills.
13. Discreet and diplomatic.
14. Willingness to travel internationally and to work outside normal office hours.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. Postgraduate qualification.
2. Experience of management of educational programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
3. Experience of student recruitment.
4. Experience of workload allocation systems.
