Job Purpose

The post will involve the development of research into Medicinal and/or Pharmaceutical Chemistry and active participation in the development and delivery of teaching initiatives in these disciplines on the School programmes.

The post will involve participation in the design, development and delivery of a range of programmes of study with a focus on Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, which will contribute to teaching and teaching-related activities within the School at an undergraduate and postgraduate level in line with the School, College and University’s teaching strategy.
In addition, research is a key component of these lecturer appointments with approximately 50% of the post allocated for this purpose. The post holder will need to contribute significantly to the research activity of the School, College and University through independent and collaborative initiatives. A wide range of research themes can be accommodated, though it is expected to involve the existing strong links with the School of Chemistry in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the Drug Discovery and Screening Facility in the College of Life and Environmental Sciences.
It is envisaged that the teaching/research & administration split will be in the order of 50:50.

Person Specification

  • • PhD in a relevant discipline
  • • Educational qualifications relevant to a Pharmacy environment or related discipline
  • • Professional qualifications relevant to a medicinal / pharmaceutical chemistry related environment.
  • • At least 3 years professionally relevant experience
  • • Post-doctoral experience in an academic post
  • • Evidence of training, specialist skills or abilities in medicinal / pharmaceutical chemistry
  • • Experience of UG research projects supervision
  • • Publications in high impact journals
  • • Ability to write in good scientific style and review written submissions
  • • Good IT presentation skills for teaching and research purposes


Research

  • • Demonstration of a range of practical research skills and techniques appropriate to their speciality
  • • Experience of supervising PhD students
  • • Experience of devising and managing research programmes
  • • Experience of writing grant applications


Teaching

  • • Enthusiasm for participation in the delivery of lectures and small group teaching
  • • Enthusiasm for participation with student assessment
  • • Willingness to contribute to course design and organization
  • • Excellent oral presentation skills
  • • Experience of developing new teaching programmes
  • • Relevant postgraduate qualification in teaching and learning in HE or willingness to complete such a qualification
  • • Experience of being personal tutor and/or mentor


Management Administration

  • • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
  • • Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes
