Academic Facilitator (5/8) (Academic Year)

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Facilitate English academic literacy classes.
  • Plan contact sessions and educational material in consultation with the module coordinator.
  • Prepare thoroughly for contact sessions.
  • Keep a time schedule and meet deadlines.
  • Responsible for classroom assessment of subject content (in close collaboration with the module coordinator) and marking.
  • Attend training compulsory sessions throughout the year.
  • Use appropriate second-language lecturing techniques and use teaching aids effectively to support the outcomes-based and resource-based methodology.
  • Concentrate on the establishment of relevant academic literacy and developmental skills within the context of the module.
  • Offer consultation sessions in the Write Site (where applicable).
  • Ensure proper written and oral communication with students.
  • Motivate students.
  • Maintain sensitivity towards students who experience problems.
  • Available for online consultation after contact sessions (where applicable).
  • Make a contribution to the finalisation and improvement of study guides (where applicable).
  • Assist with research projects in the Unit for Language Development by making data available.
  • Maintain appropriate discipline in classroom sessions to facilitate teaching and learning.
  • Keep student records in terms of marks and attendance.
  • Execute formal administrative and organisational tasks in relation to the Unit for Language Development.

  • Inherent requirements:

    • B-degree.
    • English at third-year level for English classes OR appropriate qualification, e.g. TEFL / CELTA / TESOL.
    • Good academic record.


    Required competencies

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function with ease in the University’s richly diverse working environment.
  • Intermediate computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email.
  • Ability to function independently, as well as in team.
  • Good administrative and organisational skills and the ability to function under pressure.

  • Recommendations:

    • TEFL qualification or appropriate post-graduate qualification.
    • Teaching experience on an academic literacy programme.
    • Teaching qualification and teaching experience.
    • Valid driver’s license.
