School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences

The School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences is one of the largest Schools of this type in Australia with over 50 full-time academic and research staff members who are widely published internationally and have extensive research backgrounds. The School has an established reputation for research and teaching excellence and is extremely well positioned to foster collaborative research and training opportunities.

Established in 2003, QBI (www.qbi.uq.edu.au) is housed on the St Lucia campus of The University of Queensland (UQ). It is home to more than 250 neuroscientists, working across a range of disciplines, focused on discovering the fundamental mechanisms that regulate brain development and function in health and disease. QBI has state-of-the-art core facilities for super resolution microscopy, flow cytometry, molecular genetics, histochemistry and cognitive testing. Over the past decade QBI has positioned itself as one of the world's leading neuroscience research institutes. It played a key role in contributing to UQ attaining the highest possible score of 5 for neuroscience, in both the 2010 and 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) reviews, one of only two universities in Australia to achieve this.

The role

The successful appointee will be expected to lead research in understanding the mechanisms that link exercise to improved functional brain health as revealed by a range of measures including cognitive performance and brain imaging. There are opportunities to work with clinical populations and to be part of research teams, to address individually-developed and collaboratively-generated research questions, and to supervise honours, masters and doctoral students.

The person

Applicants should possess qualifications in systems physiology, with a strong emphasis on exercise and/or brain physiology. A background using exercise as an intervention to promote healthy brain function, including cognition, is desirable. You should also have a strong desire to develop a successful and highly-productive research career in health behaviour, good general research skills, a strong methodological background, excellent statistical and analytic skills, very good writing abilities, and the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research teams.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment at Academic Level B for two years. The remuneration package will be in the range $89,458 - $106,232 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $104,667- $124,291 p.a.).
