Professor/Reader in International Development

The School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies (SPAIS) in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law at the University of Bristol seeks to appoint a Professor in International Development. We are anticipating an outstanding applicant with an extensive record of high quality grant-funded research and major scholarly publications.

The successful candidate will be expected to galvanize collaborative work within the school and across the faculty/university in issues and projects where international development is central, including leading grant initiatives in relation to the Global Challenges Research Fund. If the appointment is made at Reader level, the emphasis will be on a notable and ambitious trajectory rather than sheer extent of grants and publications. 

People and projects that can bridge the disciplines of politics/IR and sociology are encouraged, and active involvement in one or more of our three established research centres is expected (Global (In)security, Gender, and Ethnicity/Citizenship), along with participation in relevant University Research Institutes, notably the Cabot URI.

In line with the University’s and School’s strategic priorities, the position is envisaged as combining cutting-edge research with excellence in, and enthusiasm for, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The teaching contribution will be largely situated within the politics programmes.
