A fully-funded 3 year PhD studentship in materials chemistry is available at the University of Southampton. The studentship will be associated with the new EPSRC programme grant ADEPT (Advanced Devices by Electroplating; http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/N035437/1). The programme will use electrodeposition to structure semiconductors for device applications including thermoelectrics, phase change memory and IR sensors on a micro and nano scale, and involves research groups in physics, chemistry and electronic engineering in the Universities of Southampton, Warwick and Nottingham. A cohort of five students will be appointed on the project in 2017, with further students starting in 2018. These will work closely with the team of academic investigators and postdoctoral researchers in a highly interdisciplinary project.

The materials chemistry student will carry out research on the production mesoporous silica substrates for use as electrodeposition templates. Key targets are the integration of porous materials into microfabricated structures and the control of the surfaces of the porous materials to provide beneficial interactions with the semiconductors. There are significant opportunities to develop new methods to control pore size, orientation and chemistry. There also will be opportunities to develop expertise in a range of materials characterisation techniques including use of our excellent in-house diffraction, microscopy and spectroscopy facilities and experiments at central facilities such as the Diamond synchrotron.

The project is funded for 3 years and welcomes applicants from the UK and EU who have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class degree in Chemistry or another relevant discipline. Funding will cover fees and a stipend at current research council rates of £ 14,296 per annum.
