PhD Studentship in Inorganic Coordination Chemistry for Precursor Development

Chemistry

Location: Highfield Campus

Closing Date:  Friday 30 June 2017

Reference: 812316EB

Supervisors: Prof G Reid and Prof W Levason

A fully-funded 3 year PhD studentship in molecular coordination chemistry is available at the University of Southampton. The studentship will be associated with the new EPSRC programme grant ADEPT (Advanced Devices by Electroplating; http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/N035437/1). The programme will use electrodeposition to structure semiconductors for device applications including thermoelectrics, phase change memory and IR sensors on a micro and nano scale, and involves research groups in physics, chemistry and electronic engineering in the Universities of Southampton, Warwick and Nottingham. A cohort of five students will be appointed on the project in 2017, with further students starting in 2018. These will work closely with the team of academic investigators and postdoctoral researchers in a highly interdisciplinary project.

The coordination chemistry student will carry out research on the development of new inorganic complexes for evaluation as precursors for the electrodeposition of the target. Key targets are to develop reagents that have sufficient stability, solubility and suitable electrochemical properties to allow electrodeposition of the relevant elements and compound semiconductors. In addition to developing skills in synthetic inorganic chemistry, expertise in inert atmosphere techniques will be developed. There will be opportunities to gain hands-on experience in a range of key characterisation techniques, including single crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, IR, Raman and UV-visible spectroscopy, as appropriate.

Applications will be considered in the order that they are received, and the position will be considered filled when a suitable candidate has been identified

Due to funding restrictions this position is only open to UK/EU applicants

Informal enquiries may be directed to Prof. Gill Reid (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/chemistry/about/staff/gr.page) by emailing G.Reid@soton.ac.uk. The project is funded for 3 years and welcomes applicants from the UK and EU who have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class degree in Chemistry or another relevant discipline. Funding will cover fees and a stipend at current research council rates of £ 14,296 per annum.

Applications for a PhD in Chemistry should be submitted online at:

https://studentrecords.soton.ac.uk/BNNRPROD/bzsksrch.P_Login?pos=7189&majr;=7189&term;=201718

Please place ‘Prof Reid’ in the field for proposed supervisor/project. Any queries on the application process should be made to pgafnes@soton.ac.uk
