Job Details

JOB PURPOSE:

The successful applicant will take a leading role within the school’s team in delivering professionally accredited programmes in
architecture. They will contribute significantly to the school’s teaching and research portfolios and REF submission in the area of
architectural design (encompassing digital representations and technologies, construction, technology, urbanism, etc.). They will be
expected to assume leadership roles within the teaching, organisation and administration of architecture design studio and other
taught modules: coordinating programmes, themes and modules as required, delivering lectures, leading seminars, conducting
tutorials and devising and participating in other teaching activities.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:
1. Take a leading role in developing aspects of architecture’s teaching portfolio: programme leader; theme leader, etc. as required.
2. Teach architectural design studio at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level (and other subjects as directed by Head of
Architecture) informed by a thorough knowledge of specialist research area.
3. Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria
and provide constructive feedback to students.
4. Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
5. Supervise research students according to own specialist area.
6. Plan and develop independent teaching contributions and contribute to the design or revision of course units.
7. Lead on developing appropriate teaching approaches in curriculum development.

Research:
1. Take a leading role in developing and contributing to architecture at Queen’s research portfolio.
2. Build on and develop existing areas of personal architectural design-related research and expertise, and/or undertake research
within a specific research project or as a member of a research team.
3. Contribute to and author high-quality research publications in refereed journals and elsewhere.
4. Taking a leading role in identifying sources of external funding and the preparation of research grant applications.
5. Supervise postgraduate research students and research assistants.
6. Provide guidance to other staff and students on own specialist area as appropriate.
7. Contribute significantly to the school’s REF submission.

Administration/Contribution to the Community:
1. Carry out administrative duties associated with teaching and research commitments at a senior level including assessment.
2. Take a leading role in the delivery, development and quality assurance of teaching of architecture.
3. Participate and lead in School, Faculty and University administration as requested by line manager.
4. Develop links with relevant external bodies to create opportunities for future research projects.
5. Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
6. Be responsible for the record–keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials.

Planning and Organising:
1. Plan and manage teaching and tutorials of self and others as agreed with Head of Architecture.
2. Design/update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy.
3. Plan and prepare research papers to meet publication deadlines.
4. Prepare research proposals for submission for external funding.
5. As module coordinator, stage leader and/or programme/theme leader, co-ordinate with others (such as support staff or
academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
6. Plan for the use of teaching and research resources as appropriate.

Resource Management Responsibilities:
1. Use and manage teaching and research resources, laboratories and workshops as required.
2. Depending on the area of work, lead, develop and supervise research teams and projects.
3. Manage the delivery of funded research projects.
4. Act as mentor for students.

Internal and External Relationships:
1. Member of the School Board and Examination Board and such committees relevant to their administrative duties.
2. Collaborate with other staff within school.
3. Develop links to external and international networks to share information and ideas.
4. Take a lead role developing and participating in networks, for example, to identify sources of funding, contribute to student
recruitment, secure student placements, market the institution, facilitate outreach work, generate income, obtain consultancy
projects, or build relationships for future activities.
5. Contribute to the school’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, etc.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. 2(i) Honours degree in Architecture (or equivalent).
2. Masters in Architecture (or equivalent).
3. Hold or about to obtain a PhD in an area related to architectural design; or equivalent indicators of excellence.
4. High quality and extensive experience in one or more of the following areas: architectural design (encompassing digital
representations and technologies, construction, technology, urbanism, etc.).
5. A publication record commensurate with senior level in career.
6. Experience of writing major grant applications.
7. Demonstrate high academic standing and esteem in research and/or teaching within subject specialism.
8. Evidence of sustained high-quality teaching of architectural design studio and other related areas.
9. Ability to lead and contribute to broader management and administrative processes; organise outreach activities.
10. Ability to engage in critical discussion about current issues in architecture and the built environment at a high level.
11. Ability to present ideas clearly and succinctly.
12. Openness to new ways of approaching problems.
13. Willingness to work in a team.
14. Commitment to contribute to the growth of the school.
15. Willingness to travel outside Northern Ireland for periods of up to two weeks in connection with teaching or research duties.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. Membership or eligibility for membership of a relevant professional institute.
2. Working towards or completed PGCHET (or equivalent) with HEA membership.
3. 3 years experience in the construction industry in practice, research or education.
4. Success in research funding applications.
5. Well-established teacher of complex architectural design and construction at university level, or significant architectural design
experience in industry/practice.
6. Ability to manage resources and understanding of management processes.
7. Proven ability in team working.
