Job Purpose

This is a senior leadership role within the College in which the postholder will work closely with the College Director of Operations (DoOp) and the Dean of Birmingham Business School who both play key roles in College decision making, policy and strategy.

The role is to support the Dean of Birmingham Business School and Deputy Dean in developing and monitoring the delivery of the School Strategy and ensuring that the School has the resources – financial, operational and human – to ensure the delivery of that Strategy, and in undertaking these duties, the Operations Manager (OM) will be a full member of the School’s Management Team. The postholder will ensure that there is appropriate support to underpin the School strategy through providing effective and efficient professional services within the School, via professional services staff working directly in the School and also through staff working in University Corporate Services and the CoSS Hub. The OM will provide leadership and management of the School’s professional services staff and will also act as deputy to the CoSS Director of Operations (DoOp). In addition the postholder will be required to lead on College and University level issues and projects as required by the DoOp including leading on the College wide UKVI compliance.

Person Specification

Essential

  • • Formal education to degree level (or equivalent)
  • • Significant experience of managing professional services staff where appropriate staff through intermediate managers
  • • Excellent leadership and management skills and the ability to motivate teams and manage performance
  • • The ability to think strategically as well as manage operational implementation
  • • A focus on excellence and continuous service improvement
  • • The ability to work with senior managers across the university and colleagues both within the professional services teams and with academics
  • • Significant experience of operational management in a people and service-driven environment
  • • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to produce a variety of documentation including strategies, operational plans, business cases, minutes and other reports
  • • An ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and work to tight deadlines
  • • First class project planning and management skills
  • • A ‘can-do’ attitude and a solutions-driven approach
  • • The ability to work independently, to exercise professional judgement and when necessary make difficult decisions
  • • Comfortable at operating at senior management level
  • • Knowledge and significant expertise in:

- Strategic planning and translating strategy into operational plans with measurable outcomes
- Working with and influencing senior managers
- Managing operational teams in a service environment
- Human resources management
- Managing multiple complex projects
- Implementing and managing change
- UKVI compliance

Desirable

  • • Knowledge of the High Education environment and its business requirements
  • • Knowledge of running a business school and/or working in a social sciences environment
