Duties and responsibilities:

  • Teach and research responsibilities in construction and project management areas (Quantity Surveying areas recommended).
  • Compile and manage programme accreditation documentation in consultation with the departmental head for professional accreditation bodies.
  • Assist with undergraduate and postgraduate students’ research supervision depending on level of appointment.
  • Serve on university, national and international bodies / councils / committees.
  • Develop, improve and market the Department’s programmes.
  • Perform administrative tasks.
  • Provide study guidance to students (undergraduate and postgraduate), depending on level of appointment.
  • Maintain links with other tertiary institutions.
  • Coordinate departmental research, depending on level of appointment.
  • Conduct research, deliver papers and publish articles.

  • Inherent requirements:

    Junior Lecturer:

  • An honours degree in Construction Management OR Building Science OR Quantity Surveying or Engineering.
  • A good academic record.

  • Lecturer:

  • Master’s degree in the Built Environment field preceded by an honours or equivalent degree in Construction Management or Building Science or Quantity Surveying.
  • Proven experience in the delivery of poster or oral presentations at conference or equivalent activities.
  • Provide evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication, ideally in an accredited journal.
  • A good academic record.

  • Required competencies:

  • Good understanding of the theory and application of quantity surveying and / or construction management OR Construction Science (and general construction industry).
  • Ability to facilitate learning at tertiary level including assessments.
  • Ability to conduct and supervise research.
  • Good work ethics and ability to work well with members of the department and students.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Good presentation, oral and written skills.
  • Ability to develop and improve learning material.
  • Ability to participate in administrative duties, as well as departmental third-stream income initiatives and community engagements.

  • Recommendations:

    Junior Lecturer:

  • Willingness to enroll for a master’s degree at the first available opportunity, if not yet attained by the time of the appointment

  • Lecturer:

  • Willingness to enroll for a doctoral degree at the first available opportunity, if not yet attained by the time of the appointment
  • Proven research record of relevant publications in national accredited journals
  • Registration with relevant professional bodies (e.g. SACPCMP, SACQSP, or ECSA) or ability to demonstrate registration can be achieved in reasonable time.
  • Knowledge of any of the will be an advantage:land surveying, structures, sanitation and plumbing, mechanical or electrical.

  • Assumption of duties: 1 January 2017 (or as soon as possible thereafter)
