Salary:  £29,301 per annum

Full Time Fixed Term - 15 Months

Closing Date:  Friday 06 January 2017

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist in the field of Nanoscience to work in a multidisciplinary environment at the laboratory for inorganic colloidal nanoparticles and applications (LICNA). LICNA is part of the Quantum, Light and Matter Group (QLM) at the University of Southampton. LICNA’s research, relevant to this post, concerns the design of biofunctional nanoparticles (gold, upconversion, copper etc..) and their interaction with multiple systems (e.g. cells/bacteria or graphene oxide for sensing). Also, an important element of the work may involve the making of a spectroscopic set up in a physics laboratory towards a portable kit for field use.

The successful applicant should have a PhD degree in materials, chemistry, physics, biology or relevant field, experience in nanochemistry/ bionanochemistry/ nanophysics and a detailed understanding and knowledge of nanoparticle chemistry (e.g. synthesis and functionalization of DNA-upconversion nanoparticles) and nanospectroscopy (creating a portable spectroscopic set up). Apart from this project the successful applicant may be involved in other projects running in the group across the field of nanochemistry. Desirable qualifications include skills at microscopy techniques (e.g. TEM), nanoparticle purification strategies (e.g. size exclusion chromatography, gel electrophoresis), DNA chemistry/design (e.g. DNA origami design) and nanoparticle coupling strategies (e.g. EDC chemistry).

It is expected that candidates can provide evidence of the following:

- An awarded PhD* or equivalent qualification related to nanoscience

- A willingness and ability to assist with the supervision of postgraduate students.

- Excellent communication and organisational skills and proven track record in journal publications and conference presentations including the ability to write up research results for publication in leading peer-reviewed journals.

- The ability to work independently and a good team work attribute.

For informal enquiries of the position, please contact Dr Antonios Kanaras (email: a.kanaras@soton.ac.uk).

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Application procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Suzanne Stone (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 4043. Please quote reference 813616WF on all correspondence.
