Job Purpose
We seek to appoint a highly motivated individual to join an internationally recognised research group within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy. The main purpose of the post will be to develop a novel cancer immunotherapy strategy within Professor Ben Willcoxs Group.
The post holder will be working on a 18 month Wellcome Trust Pathfinder grant to undertake a project entitled A novel gamma delta T cell platform technology to enable drug-tunable targeting of CAR tumour associated antigen targets The work will involve Chimeric antigen receptor(CAR)-engineered T-cell-based approaches and in vivo models. The research builds upon Prof Willcoxs extensive exposure to current immunotherapeutic strategies and challenges in cancer tumour immunology. He is a Wellcome investigator, leads the Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy Centre (CIIC) at Birmingham and undertakes expert advisory roles for industry. The post therefore offers potential opportunities to develop a new approach in this exciting area of research, and potentially to interact with industry companies who may be interested in developing it after completion of the award.
The candidate should have a first degree in a relevant area, and a PhD and/or post-doctoral experience in immunology. He/she must have excellent academic qualifications, strong initiative and good teamwork skills.
Person Specification
- • First degree in a relevant area and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
- • A strong academic record commensurate with career to date/ level of candidates post-doctoral experience
- • High level analytical capability and good intellectual reasoning.
- • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
- • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones including a depth of specialist knowledge in the following techniques:-
- Molecular cloning
- ELISA, T cell functional assays, Flow cytometry
- Experience of working with in vivo murine models
- • Ability to keep good records of research results eg laboratory notes and to present results clearly and appropriately. And a good knowledge of data-analysis and interpretation
- • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
- • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes

Desirable:
- • A current UK Home Office personal license for working with mice.
