JOB PURPOSE:

To develop new and innovative approaches to the complex anti-cancer natural product diazonamide A.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Design efficient synthetic routes to the desired compounds. Develop and refine experimental methods to prepare the
aforementioned compounds from the designed routes. Deliver the desired compounds efficiently and with high purity.
2. Undertake research under supervision as a member of the research team.
3. As a member of a research team, perform routine laboratory upkeep tasks and be responsible for a certain amount of communal laboratory jobs.
4. Carry out analyses, interpret and annotate spectroscopic data.
5. Keep in contact with collaborators which may involve visits to their laboratories. Present regular progress reports on research to
members of the research group, collaborators. Preparation of draft quarterly reports to external funding body.
6. Prepare, in consultation with supervisor, material for publication in national and international journals and presentations at international conferences.
7. Where needed, provide guidance to junior members of the group.
8. Carry out routine administrative tasks associated with the research project/s to ensure that project/s are completed on time and
within budget. These might include organisation of project meetings and documentation, financial control, risk assessment of research activities.
9. Read academic papers and journals to keep abreast of developments in the research area.

Planning and Organising:

1. Plan for specific aspects of research programmes. Timescales range from 1-6 months in advance and contribute to research group planning.
2. Plan for the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops where appropriate.
3. Plan own day-to day activity within framework of the agreed research programme.
4. Plan up to a year in advance to meet deadlines for sample preparations and to prepare presentations and papers for conferences.
5. Coordinate and liaise with other members of the research group and collaborators over work progress.

Resource Management Responsibilities:

1. Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
2. Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research.

Internal and External Relationships:

1. Liaise on a regular basis with colleagues and students.
2. Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration.
3. Join external networks to share information and ideas.
4. Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries etc.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. Have or be about to obtain a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry.
2. At least 3 years relevant research experience in synthetic organic chemistry with a focus on asymmetric methodology and/or multi-step target oriented synthesis.
3. Evidence of developing and discovering new synthetic routes, including new reaction development, on small scale.
4. High level skills in spectroscopic compound identification and characterisation of complex molecules. In particular, the use of
modern 1D and 2D high field NMR experiments for compound and stereochemistry identification alongside the use of mass
spectrometry and HPLC to confirm structure/stereoselectivity.
5. Must be well versed on a wide range of the chemical literature and keep up-to-date with the most recent and high profile work within the field.
6. Excellent communication and presentation skills.
7. Ability to present work to their peers in formal and informal setting using PowerPoint.
8. Ability to communicate complex information clearly.

16. Must have the ability to work legally in both the UK and US without visa sponsorship.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. Experience in transition metal catalysed reactions or medicinal chemistry.
