Job Details
This research project is a new collaboration between the School of Physics and Astronomy and a large multinational food company. It is focussed on understanding the local heterogeneity of material properties and rheological properties in samples which can be described as a complex polymer blend. Bulk properties will be measured using established techniques, and correlated with structure at the nanoscale using novel atomic force microscopy (AFM) based methods. These properties will be measured across a wide range of length scales, and versus temperatures which reflect the manufacturing process. As well as the requirement for detailed material characterisation, the project also involves development and verification of the nanoscale techniques, and a more fundamental understanding of how the bulk properties of polymer blends emerge from the complexity of the phase structure at the nano- and micro- length scales.
