Thermal and structural properties of the Sumatra subduction zone input sediments

The department of Ocean and Earth Science at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton is seeking to recruit a Postgraduate Research Associate to conduct research on the Sumatra subduction zone, utilising ocean drilling data recently collected on International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 362. The study will involve a) thermal modelling of the input section and b) interpretation of seismic reflection data integrated with drilled core-log data to evaluate the history of faulting within the oceanic plate near the drill sites and along the margin. The Sumatra subduction zone was the source of the 2004 magnitude 9+ earthquake and tsunami. Drilling during IODP Expedition 362 now provides ground truth of the input sediments and rocks that eventually form the earthquake- and tsunami-generating plate boundary fault. These results and this project are designed to evaluate how the properties and structure of the oceanic plate evolve and ultimately control the slip behaviour of the megathrust fault. The Geology and Geophysics Research Group in Southampton is renowned for its expertise in active tectonics and in marine geophysics. Members of the group have been analysing the structure, development and natural hazard potential of subduction zones for more than 15 years, with considerable expertise in the analysis of marine geophysics, marine geology and ocean drilling data. The successful applicant will be part of the highly active Geology and Geophysics research group and will work with project partners in the UK, US and continental Europe. This project is funded by NERC UKIODP.

Applicants will have relevant background to support numerical modelling, sediment core and log analysis, and seismic interpretation. An MSci (undergraduate integrated Masters degree) in geology or geophysics would be advantageous. Applicants will have demonstrated their ability to accurately analyse and interpret complex quantitative and qualitative data, and will be able to present summary information in a clear and concise format.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professors Lisa McNeill on email: lcmn@noc.soton.ac.uk or Tim Henstock on email: then@noc.soton.ac.uk.

You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The vacancy will close at midnight on the closing date as shown above.
