INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGER

PEROMNES POST LEVEL 5

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for the operational management and control of the infrastructure group. This includes responsibility for the optimal and cost effective provisioning of ICT infrastructure and services such as the data and telephony network, enterprise hosting services, Internet services, infrastructure logical security, data centre management, and workstation provisioning.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The execution, maintenance and improvement of all processes or parts of processes (ITIL-related) applicable to the management of the IT infrastructure, in accordance with the responsibility assignment matrix (RACI);
  • The development of appropriate planning systems and plans for the  implementation, management and maintenance of extensive infrastructure systems;
  • Setting up of cross-functional teams to focus on efficient service delivery;
  • Identification and implementation of adequate disaster recovery measurements;
  • Active involvement and responsible for several processes such as change management, capacity management, availability management, configuration management, incident management, problem management, release management, service level management, continuity management and portfolio management;
  • The management of the Department which will include functions such as budgeting, cost management, asset control and the management and development of all staff.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A professional four-year degree in an applicable field such as Computer Science, Informatics, Information Technology or Engineering with 10 years’ relevant experience as indicated below; OR
  • A three-year National Diploma or B Tech degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering or Information Technology from a recognised tertiary institution with 15 years’ relevant experience as indicated below.

Experience made up as follows:

  • Technical/professional experience (2-4 years):
    • Programming, software engineering methodologies, testing, etc
    • In-depth knowledge of technologies and their utilisation, eg data and voice networks, wireless devices, server hardware and operating systems, data storage, firewalls, Internet, data centre operation and maintenance, infrastructural software.
  • Supervision and project management experience (2-4 years):
    • Leading work teams to accomplish set technical goals within a larger project;
    • Drawing up project plans;
    • Managing projects according to schedule, budget and specification;
    • Liaison with clients to determine project goals and report progress.
  • Middle management experience (5-7 years):
    • Managing teams: setting goals, controlling outcomes, performance management;
    • Implementing operational measures to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of processes;
    • Interaction with customers and negotiation to determine business requirements;
    • Establish relationships with key suppliers to ensure good performance on contracts.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Appropriate language and communication skills, both verbal and written;  
  • Ability to build effective teams;
  • Ability to remain informed of changing infrastructure technology trends;
  • Systematic and methodical planning to implement and manage infrastructure systems;
  • Analytical approach and problem solving skills.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • An applicable postgraduate qualification in Information Technology, Engineering, etc;
  • A relevant Business, Technology or Project Management qualification;
  • An understanding of the functioning of academic processes;
  • Sufficient background to interpret and manage the impact of technical decisions in the organisation;
  • An understanding of best practices for ICT infrastructure;
  • Experience in:
    • Network design, equipment installation, servers, fibre and UTP cabling;
    • Building relationships (not project specific) with internal departments;
    • Financial management and control;
    • Project management.

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 637 320 to R 812 286 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
