PhD Studentship: Digital histopathology resource for image-based diagnosis

Bioengineering Group

Location: Highfield Campus

Closing Date:  Friday 01 December 2017

Project Reference: EngSci-Bio-145

Project Themes: Bioengineering and Human Factors

Lately, IBM bought billions of medical images to transform image-based diagnostics. Furthermore, Google’s recent offshoot Deep Mind Health is focusing on the analysis of medical data to assist clinicians in radiotherapy planning, for instance when differentiating between diseased and healthy tissues on computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging scans of cancer patients or when segmenting digital eye scans for the early detection and treatment of common eye diseases.

These image-based diagnostic efforts are currently focused on areas where digitisation of medical imaging has been accomplished, such as in radiology. In histopathology, the image data from light microscopy is generally not digitised to date, yet the digital revolution towards digital histopathology has gained momentum and will soon give rise to novel image-based diagnostic opportunities.

We recently demonstrated for the first time that high-quality three-dimensional (3D) imaging can be performed on standard paraffin-embedded (PFE) diagnostic soft tissue samples using micro-computed CT (μCT), which reveals diagnostically relevant tissue structures and cellular detail (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/news/2016/04/microct-lung-scan.page). Moreover, in collaboration with an industrial partner, we have developed a first-of-kind μCT system for clinical pathology and we are now evidencing the diagnostic value of this clinical μCT system, based on correlative 2D microscopy and 3D μCT imaging. Finally, we recently installed a state-of-the art whole slide imaging system at the Biomedical Imaging Unit (BIU) at the University Hospital Southampton. The goal of this studentship is to establish, validate, and maintain a standardised and integrated high-throughput correlative imaging resource and data management system for PFE tissue biopsies, together with corresponding patient records. To this end, the PhD student will work together with our existing multidisciplinary team, drawn from pathology, imaging engineering, clinical medicine, computational engineering, and medical informatics.

This multidisciplinary PhD project offers a unique interdisciplinary programme at the engineering, life science, and biomedical interface, with shared support from the Faculty of Engineering & the Environment and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton. The student will directly collaborate with researchers at the BIU and μ-VIS X-ray Imaging Centre, while benefitting from the exceptional opportunity to gain expertise in cutting-edge bioimaging technologies, computational engineering approaches and our translational efforts to change the life for the better, based on engineering and biomedical expertise. The ideal candidate will have biomedical (imaging) experience and a good knowledge of computational engineering approaches. In general, the candidate must have a strong background in engineering sciences with a strong interest in biomedical questions.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Philipp Schneider, Bioengineering Science Research Group, Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, Email: p.schneider@soton.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0) 23 8059 4640.   To apply please use the following link http://www.southampton.ac.uk/engineering/postgraduate/research_degrees/apply.page? and select Faculty of Engineering and the Environment.
