Job Purpose

The University of Birmingham wishes to appoint a full-time, permanent Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics with effect from1st September 2017.

The post holder will create and disseminate knowledge by initiating and conducting original research, publishing in their area of research expertise, and developing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. In addition, the post holder will contribute to the Department and School by undertaking academic administration as appropriate to the appointment. The main research fields within the Department are corpus linguistics, discourse analysis/stylistics, and cognitive linguistics/psycholinguistics. We are keen to appoint a candidate who is working in at least one of these fields and who is conducting research that has clear real-world applications (for example, to health, business, teaching or other social contexts).

Person Specification

  • • A PhD in English Language, Applied Linguistics, English Language and Linguistics
  • • Extensive research/teaching experience and scholarship within English Language and Linguistics, including knowledge of a range of corpus tools and methods
  • • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning/ research
  • • Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels


Research

  • • Experience and achievement reflected in a growing reputation
  • • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver high quality results
  • • Extensive experience of applying and/or developing and devising successful models, techniques and methods
  • • Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity


Teaching

  • • Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes
  • • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching, and advising colleagues
  • • Experience and success in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability


Management Administration

  • • Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes
  • • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
  • • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
