JOB PURPOSE:

To contribute significantly to the teaching of Chemical Engineering within the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, to
conduct independent high-level research in a relevant area that will substantially enhance the School’s international profile, and to
contribute to the School’s administration/outreach activity.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:
1. Carry out the full range of teaching and assessment duties, at undergraduate and taught postgraduate level, including teaching
process design and supervising undergraduate projects.
2. Design and develop modules and programmes (at undergraduate and postgraduate level).
3. Develop new and innovative teaching approaches, including in the areas of distance learning and virtual reality learning.
4. Contribute to the delivery and management of the School’s collaborative teaching agreements, travelling abroad where necessary.
5. Act as internal examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Research:
1. To undertake independent, high-quality research in an area which fits with the research priorities of the School of Chemistry and
Chemical Engineering, developing and maintaining a reputation that will substantially enhance the School’s international profile.
2. Be an active member, and potential leader, of one of the School’s research groups.
3. Sustain an extensive track record of published research findings by publishing in refereed journals and presenting at
national/international conferences.
4. Secure grant funding to build and maintain a research team. Supervise team members.
5. Provide leadership in research, including by leading funding bids and working with colleagues to develop innovate research proposals.
6. Supervise research staff and postgraduate students.
7. Ensure that research projects are completed on time and within budget.
8. Act as referee and contribute to peer assessment of research.

Administration/Contribution to the Community:
1. Provide leadership by taking on appropriate School roles (e.g. Advisor of Studies, Year Head, Programme Lead, Examinations Officer, etc).
2. Act as mentor, line manager and/or appraiser to colleagues as required by the Head of School.
3. Provide pastoral care for students, dealing with relevant issues in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner and providing
appropriate referrals where necessary.
4. Sit on School, Faculty and University committees as required.
5. Contribute to the School’s outreach, recruitment and internationalisation activities.

Planning and Organising:
1. Participate in the development of School research, teaching, internationalisation and recruitment strategies, and contribute to their delivery.
2. Provide leadership in the planning and delivery of teaching and teaching administration.
3. Plan and deliver research, teaching and consultancy or similar programmes and ensure that resources are available.
4. Contribute to the management of accreditation, internal quality, audit and other external assessments.

Resource Management Responsibilities:
1. Develop and manage staff and resources, in support of major research, teaching and administrative activities.
2. Contribute to the overall management of the School, in areas such as budget and business planning.

Internal and External Relationships:
1. Collaborate with other academics within the School and across the wider University.
2. Lead and develop internal networks.
3. Lead and develop external links with external networks, for example, with funders, collaborators, external examiners, accrediting bodies, etc.
4. Lead and develop links to foster collaboration in teaching and research.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. Honours degree in engineering or physical sciences.
2. Hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering.
3. Recognised excellence and reputation in subject specialism.
4. Sustained publication record in peer reviewed/referred journals or invited presentations that are REF returnable at international level.
5. Evidence of successful PhD supervision to completion.
6. Substantial experience of teaching and assessing Chemical Engineering at University level.
7. Contribution to range of administrative tasks at a strategic level e.g. as course leader.
8. Contribution to a range of community outreach programmes.
9. Contribution to designing and delivering innovative new programmes.
10. Proven ability to plan and deliver a programme of research and develop techniques, sources of funding and/or proven skills in
coaching and developing others in best practice techniques.
11. Ability to communicate complex information effectively.
12. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
13. Involvement in productive external collaboration.
14. Ability to provide effective leadership.
15. Willingness and ability to work as part of a diverse team contributing to all areas of the School’s activities.
16. Willingness to teach and work away from QUB, including abroad if necessary.
17. Understanding of resource management processes and skills to apply them effectively.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. Completed PGCHET (or equivalent) with HEA membership.
2. Hold Chartered Engineer status with a relevant engineering professional body.
3. Evidence of experience in research commercialisation or other appropriate impact indicators.
4. Recent relevant experience of teaching process design.
5. Experience of leadership in the delivery of postgraduate taught courses.
6. Experience of developing and delivering innovative methods of teaching and assessment e.g. distance learning and/or virtual reality learning.
7. Experience of supervising, managing and supporting staff.
