This project will develop efficient models of x-ray scattering. X-rays are used in many fields of modern medicine and science. For example, using tomographic scanners, x-rays can be used to generate three dimensional images of an object’s internal structure. In these systems, accurate estimation of the three dimensional distribution of internal material properties requires accurate and efficient models of the x-ray system, including models of the interaction of x-rays with the material. This project will look at one aspect of these models, the way in which x-rays are scattered when they interact with material. Accurate models of this phenomenon can be extremely slow to evaluate, even on modern parallel computing platforms. More efficient algorithms are thus required if these models are to be used as part of a tomographic reconstruction method.
This project is part of a wider effort by Dr Blumensath’s group to better model x-ray interactions and to utilise these models in image reconstruction. The group has dedicated high performance computers as well as access to of the University of Southampton’s μ-VIS x-ray imaging centre, one of the leading x-ray research facilities in the world.
