    The Faculty of Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. As the first university in Australia to grant degrees in science (1882), science has long been at the cornerstone of the institution and this continues today.     The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine is one of four schools in the Faculty of Sciences. The school is located at the University's Waite campus, the pre-eminent plant and agricultural science research site in the Southern Hemisphere. A number of academic courses are taught through the school in areas including: agriculture, viticulture and oenology, food and nutrition science, and plant biotechnology. The school represents a world-class concentration of scientific researchers, educators and infrastructure.

    The Plant Accelerator® is a national plant and agricultural research facility located at the University of Adelaide's Waite Research Precinct. Host to the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility (APPF), the custom built facility houses state-of-the-art imaging systems that allow the continuous measurements of the physical attributes (phenotype) of plants automatically and non-destructively. The Biostatistician will work with the Senior Biostatistician to  provide statistical support for users of The Plant Accelerator® and be involved in associated research activities.

    Reporting to the Scientific Director of The Plant Accelerator®, the Biostatistician, will engage with researchers using the APPF and undertake quality control and statistical analysis of data from experiments carried out at the APPF. This will involve

    • consulting with researchers using The Plant Accelerator®
    • carry out data manipulation using R and mixed model analyses using asreml-R
    • contributing to the research activities of The Plant Accelerator, including statistical method development.


    Salary: Level A, $63,975 to $86,820 per annum per annum.

    Superannuation: An employer contribution of 9.5% applies.

    Term of position: This fixed-term contract is available immediately for 12 months.

    Position requirements

    To be successful you should have:

    • Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Computer Science or Statistics
    • Knowledge of the analysis of time course series using different mathematical growth models
    • Knowledge of the spatial adjustment of large scale experimental datasets
    • Demonstrated experience in the use of R or related software packages and generation of high quality graphical outputs
    • Ability to undertake quality control of large, complex datasets in close collaboration with the plant scientists undertaking the respective projects
    • High quality interpersonal and excellent communication skills with researchers of diverse backgrounds
