Job Details

Are you looking to apply your skills in experimental physical chemistry to a study of the metals Nickel and Aluminium which ablate from cosmic dust in the upper atmosphere?

As Research Fellow in Experimental Gas Kinetics you will join a major 3-year NERC-funded programme focused on understanding the chemistry of Ni and Al in the upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere region of the atmosphere. These metals ablate from the roughly 40 tonnes of cosmic dust particles which enter the atmosphere every day. You will carry out a laboratory study of the reaction kinetics of neutral and ion-molecule reactions which control the speciation of these metals. The resulting laboratory data will then feed into a whole atmosphere chemistry climate model, for comparison with novel lidar observations of Ni and Al species which will be undertaken as part of this project at observatories in North America, Europe and China.
