JOB PURPOSE:

The successful applicant will join the School’s team in developing a strong, internationally recognised research profile, delivering
professionally accredited courses in planning and undertaking other activities of an effective planning school. We are looking to
strengthen our research and teaching capacity in the following areas: urban regeneration, housing, economic development and
planning practice (as above). Appointees will be expected to integrate their specialist knowledge with teaching programmes through

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Develop and plan an area of personal research and expertise in the fields of urban regeneration, housing and/or economic
development, in a planning context while contributing to wider interdisciplinary research teams.
2. Sustain a high quality publication record by publishing in high quality refereed journals, in order to strengthen the discipline's REF return.
3. Presenting at leading conferences to assist individual research and so that the School's research profile is enhanced.
4. Identify sources of external funding and preparing research grant applications to support research in collaborative, interdisciplinary teams.
5. Contribute to the development of a research impact profile of the School.
6. Supervise postgraduate research students.
7. Direct, coach and develop research staff, where appropriate.
8. Ensure that research projects are completed on time and within budget.

Teaching:

1. Teaching responsibilities will cover areas that complement existing staff expertise, in urban regeneration, housing, economic
development and planning practice.
2. Plan and develop independent teaching contributions and contribute to the design or revision of course units.
3. Develop teaching methods, contribute to the development of work placement, design course units and deliver teaching and
assessment activities including lectures, coursework, practical exercises, seminars and fieldwork to undergraduates and postgraduates.
4. Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
5. Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria
and provide constructive feedback to students.
6. Contribute to the enhancement of quality teaching within the subject, school or faculty.
7. Contribute to curriculum development and innovative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment.

Administration/Contribution to the Community:

1. Carry out administrative duties associated with teaching and research commitments, including assessment.
2. Contribute to the School's outreach strategy, including student recruitment and marketing, by developing external links with
relevant external bodies to create opportunities for the future.
3. Develop links with relevant external bodies to encourage knowledge transfer opportunities and create opportunities for future research projects.
4. Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure, as far as practicable, that all relevant issues are dealt with in a
timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
5. Carry out designated School functions, including, for example, participation in committee work, assisting in the process of
admissions, preparation of submission for teaching quality assessment or the REF.
6. Participate in School, Faculty and University administration as requested by line manager.

Planning and Organising:

1. Plan for and set teaching and research objectives over a number of years.
2. Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School.
3. As module leader, co-ordinate with others (such as support staff or academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
4. Design/update modules in line with School's teaching strategy.
5. Plan for the use of teaching and research resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate.
6. Prepare research proposals for submission for external funding.

Resource Management Responsibilities:

1. Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development.
2. Depending on the area of work, could supervise the work of others, for example in research teams and projects.
3. Manage own teaching, research and administrative demands under general supervision of Head of School.
4. Assist in the development of skills and competence in others (for example through the supervision of research students).
5. Manage use of resources for research and teaching.
6. Participate in judgements regarding the use of resources within their research project/school.
7. Act as mentor for students in capacity of personal tutor.

Internal and External Relationships:

1. Communicate complex and conceptual ideas to students as well as to peers using high level skills and a range of media.
2. Member of the School Board and Examination Board and such committees relevant to their administrative duties.
3. Collaborate with other academics within School and across the University.
4. Participate in and develop networks, for example to identify sources of funding, contribute to student recruitment, act as website
editor, secure student placements, market the institution, facilitate outreach work, generate income, obtain consultancy projects,
or build relationships for future activities.
5. Contribute to the School's outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, professional bodies etc.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. Relevant degree with a PhD completed in a relevant subject.
2. A high academic standing with a reputation in research within fields of urban regeneration, housing and/or economic development, in a planning context.
3. Evidence of developing research methodologies, models, approaches and techniques.
4. Evidence of high quality scholarly activity including conference presentation, preparing research proposals, book reviews and publications.
5. Sustained record of publishing in high quality peer reviewed journals that are REF returnable.
6. Ability to design course materials and plan and organise the delivery and assessment of taught courses in the discipline of planning.
7. Evidence of good teaching evaluations.
8. Contribution to a wider range of administrative tasks.
9. Contribution to a wider range of community/outreach activities.
10. Ability to negotiate contracts independently or as a leader of a section in major projects.

14. Demonstrable intellectual ability.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. Masters in planning or related discipline.
2. PGCHET (or equivalent) with HEA membership.
3. Membership or eligibility of the Royal Town Planning Institute and/or Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
4. Research expertise that complements the expertise of existing staff in the planning discipline.
5. Evidence of external funding secured.
6. International orientation to research activity.
7. Sustained teaching experience at University level having ability to design modules and assessment methods.
8. Teaching expertise in areas that complements existing staff expertise, particularly in urban regeneration, housing and/or economic development in a planning context.
9. Experience in student recruitment and/or placement programmes.
10. Active engagement with relevant professional bodies.
11. Ability and willingness to lead overseas field trips and travel internationally for research purposes.
