JOB PURPOSE:

To contribute to research and teaching including the Gibson MSc degrees in Sustainable and Rural Development and the cross
faculty degree in Environmental Management. To lead an exceptional program of economic research into global challenges facing
agriculture, food, nutrition and health such as obesity, health and nutrition, food safety, security, and integrity, challenges of lifestyle
behaviour change, securing ecosystem services and sustainable production. To teach as required in some of the following areas:
agricultural, and environmental economics and policy, food marketing and policy, land and business economics at undergraduate and
postgraduate levels, and contribute to the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, and to School
administration and outreach activity.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:

1. Deliver teaching and assessment activities within own area of specialism including lectures, setting/marking coursework,
practicals, and field work to undergraduates and postgraduates.
2. Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria
and provide constructive feedback to students.
3. Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
4. Oversee and supervise research students.
5. Supervise practical and project work where it is part of the course, and advise students on techniques.
6. Plan and develop independent teaching contributions and contribute to the design or revision of course units.
7. Help to develop appropriate teaching approaches and contribute to curriculum development.

Research:

1. Develop and plan independent research within food, agricultural and health related economics and, where appropriate, as a member of a research team.
2. Publish research in leading journals etc. and present work at relevant international conferences.
3. Carry out analysis, critical evaluations and interpretations using methodologies and other techniques appropriate to agricultural and food economics.
4. Source and secure external funding independently and in collaboration with others to ensure continued growth of the research profile if the University.
5. Provide guidance to other staff and students in agricultural and food economics and related areas across the One Health Spectrum.
6. Establish collaborative research with colleagues in other institutions.

Administration/Contribution to the Community:

1. Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy.
2. Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
3. Carry out designated routine School administrative duties, including, for example, committee work, course administration etc.
4. Be responsible for the record keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials.

Planning and Organising:

1. Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School Design/update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy.
2. Plan and prepare research papers to meet publication deadlines.
3. Prepare research proposals for submission for external funding.

Resource Management Responsibilities:

1. Use teaching and research resources as required.
2. Co-manage, where appropriate, external funding relating to research project.
3. Act as mentor for students.

Internal and External Relationships:

1. Member of the School Board and such committees relevant to their administrative duties and teaching and research activities.
2. Collaborate with other staff within School.
3. Involved in developing links or joining external networks to share information and ideas.
4. Where appropriate, establish collaborative research links with external researchers.
5. Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries etc.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. Honours degree in relevant subject.
2. PhD completed in an area of Applied Economics relevant to research across the One Health Spectrum in food, agriculture,
environment and related aspects of human health.
3. Research interests in food production marketing and policy, the economics of food choice and/or the economics of human
nutrition and health that are sustainable and which complement or enhance research activities of the School. Strong quantitative
background in econometrics, choice modelling, economic experiments and related area consistent with stage of career.
4. A sustained publication record in international peer reviewed journals that are REF returnable in accordance with career stage.
5. Record of presentations in relevant international conferences.
6. A research profile which will demonstrate ability and willingness to develop an exceptional research portfolio in econometrics,
economic experiments and food choice modelling, complementing or enhancing current activity in Queen’s.
7. Evidence of submissions for external funding in accordance with career stage.
8. Well established reputation on the international conference circuit in accordance with career stage.
9. Teaching experience relevant to the post with an interest in developing undergraduate and postgraduate courses of interest to
the School and the Institute.
10. Ability to contribute to broader management and administrative processes in the School.
11. Willingness to engage in Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.
12. Ability to strengthen the School’s national and international research networks.
13. Ability to advance the research and teaching goals of the School.
14. Ability to communicate complex information effectively to scientific, economics and lay stakeholders.
15. Effective interpersonal skills.
16. Ability to manage resources, staff and postgraduate students. Demonstrable intellectual ability.
17. Flexibility to work with other disciplines.
18. Must be prepared to work as part of a team and be committed to Queen’s University Belfast, the Institute for Global Food
Security, the School of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences.
19. Willingness to attend meetings and conferences nationally and internationally as requested.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. PhD related to experiments in food choice or food choice modelling.
2. PGCHET and/or membership of an appropriate professional and/or teaching body eg. HEA.
3. Publications in leading economics journals e.g. .Journal of Health Economics, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the
European Review of Agricultural Economics, Land Economics, the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management.
4. Evidence of working successfully with others in research teams.
5. Evidence of research and collaborations in ODA countries (http://www.oecd.org/dac/stats/daclist.htm).
6. Evidence of management of research projects, conducting and supervising large surveys and supervision of PhD students.
7. Evidence of making successful presentations to mixed audiences including public presentations.
8. Proven involvement in successful interdisciplinary research teams as a good team player.
