Job Details
JOB PURPOSE:
To be an active member of a research project team assisting in the delivery of research and training activities within a specified
project scope aimed to meet overall research objectives and to submit a thesis in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree.
The Translational Research Network for Prostate Cancer (TransPot) is a pan-European academic/private/clinical sector research
training network focussed on Translational Cancer Research, Cancer Cell Biology and Applied Systems Biology/Systems Medicine.
TransPot will integrate the leading research scientists and laboratories in Europe with an interest in these research fields to train 11
early stage researchers (ESRs). We will incorporate the latest multi-disciplinary research technologies to understand lethal prostate
cancer (PC). The TransPot consortium will offer an innovative research training programme to our ESRs to ensure that they can
effectively operate in today’s multi-disciplinary programs. This will include both research (e.g. target validation and drug discovery;
biomarker discovery and validation) and transferable skill sets (e.g. cross species oncoomics analysis; novel preclinical (culture/in
vivo) models). As a result of this unique training programme, our ESRs will develop into the next generation of multi-disciplinary
scientists with skills that are in great demand for both today’s academic and non-academic sectors.
The ESR working at QUB will undertake a project to model androgen receptor mediated gene regulatory networks to predict CRPC.
This will involve mapping androgen receptor binding sites genome-wide in a range of relevant pre-clinical models of prostate cancer
and integrating these data with transcriptomic profiles.
MAJOR DUTIES:
1. Enrol in a PhD by research programme and carry out the research and training activities specified by a personal development plan (PDP).
2. To design, develop and execute experiments related to the above titled project under the supervision of Dr Ian Mills in order to
obtain reliable data and to evaluate and interpret the results using methodologies and other techniques appropriate to the area of the research.
3. Record, analyse and write up results of own work and contribute to the production of research reports and publications.
4. Prepare regular process reports on the performed research and training activities.
5. Present the research outcomes to the group research seminars and to external audiences to disseminate and publicise research findings.
6. Actively participate in the PhD training activities.
7. Study and follow the technical literature including academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast with the state-of-the-art in the project topical area.
8. Carry out undergraduate supervision/demonstrating/teaching duties under supervisor direction and according to the university regulations.
9. Undertake work secondments with partners of the TRANSPOT Marie Curie Initial Training Program.
10. Carry out routine administrative duties as requested.
Planning and Organising:
1. Contribute to the PDP development and regular updates.
2. Manage own time and meet agreed deadlines.
3. Plan own day-to-day activity within the framework of the agreed research and training programme.
4. Contribute to the planning of research training activities, reports and publications.
Resource Management Responsibilities:
1. Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
2. Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students involved with research and training.
Internal and External Relationships:
1. Liaise with research colleagues and support staff on routine matters.
2. Make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding and form relationships for future collaboration.
3. Attend and contribute to relevant meetings and training events.
4. Contribute to the School and project outreach programmes by establishing links with local community groups, industries etc.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
1. 1st class or 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in cell/molecular biology or closely related subjects.
2. Practical experience in cell/molecular biology.
3. Understanding of bioinformatics and related computing.
4. Willingness to contribute to the School and project outreach activities.
5. Understanding of related microbial biochemistry
Ability to organise resources, manage time and meet deadlines.
6. Ability to act effectively as a laboratory demonstrator.
7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
8. Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
9. Demonstrable intellectual ability.
10. Ability to interact with colleagues and staff.
11. Be eligible and qualified for enrolment in the PhD programme at QUB.
12. Be willing and able to spend time on secondments at the TRANSPOT partners.
13. Be willing to travel to programme meetings and to present at conferences.
14. This post is not open to candidates who have already obtained a PhD.
15. Applicants must not have spent more than a total period of 12 months in the UK during the three years immediately prior to recruitment.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA:
1. Specific experience and understanding of functional genomics.
2. Practical experience in molecular/cell biology related to cell signalling.
3. Practical experience in bioinformatics analysis of gene expression and sequencing data.
4. Willingness to assist in undergraduate supervision and teaching.
