Economics of Migration and Refugees
The Economics Department at the University of Southampton has recently been awarded a British Academy grant, led by Professor Jackie Wahba to study the impact of the Syrian refugee influx to Jordan on its labour market and public services. Applications are invited from researchers with interest in the economics of migration and refugees. This is a part-time (50%) one year fixed-term contract.
You will assist the Principal Investigator, Professor Wahba with research on the project “Syrian Refugees in Jordan: The Challenge of Sustainable Development.” The project will explore the impact of the Syrian refugee influx to Jordan on its labour market and public services. Using new data, it will study the socio-economic impact for both Jordanians, Syrian refugees and other groups of immigrants, highlighting the effects on women, youth and children. The project is at the heart of the development challenges: dealing with strengthening the resilience of communities hosting refugees but also providing rigorous evidence to inform policy on sustaining governance, growth and human development. Understanding the impact of the refugee influx on nationals, existing immigrants and refugees is paramount to improving the welfare of all those affected directly and indirectly, as well the development of both host and origin countries.
You will have the opportunity to work with original individual level panel data and will analyse labour force data. Some of your responsibilities will include analysing detailed and complex quantitative data sets on the Jordanian labour market, and refugees.
You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Economics or an MSc in Economics, enrolment in PhD in Economics and relevant industry experience.
You will have strong quantitative skills and possess the ability to work independently. You will have an experience in statistical/econometric analysis of micro data and an interest in the economics of migration and refugees.
*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
The post is tenable from 1 February 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
