Job Details
Job Purpose
The post holder is part of a technical team who will provide core support for the Colleges Teaching Laboratories in delivering the College of Medical & Dental Sciences practical teaching commitments. The post holder being primarily responsible for the day-to-day setup and preparation of materials required within the Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy teaching laboratories. The post involves significant preparation of undergraduate class materials (reagents & equipment), the post holder will be expected to help and assist students during practical sessions.
The post holder would be expected to operate outside of the standard university operating hours during term time due to the timetable driven nature of the post and be expected to ensure that local and University Health & Safety policies are enforced within the laboratories.
Person Specification
- Previous experience of working within a teaching laboratory in a chemical or biological laboratory environment or demonstrate transferable research skills.
- Having a good working understanding of good chemical practice, good microbiological practice and aseptic technique.
- To be able to demonstrate good organizational and time management skills as the post holder will routinely work under considerable pressure due to the timetable-dependent nature of the work.
- To demonstrate the ability to be able to work in a flexible manner due to changes in the prioritization of tasks.
- Demonstrate the ability to work alone and as part of a team.
- Be willing to undergo First Aid training
- Excellent communication skills, to be able to interact with a wide range of staff and student members.
- Ability to use own initiative and prioritize tasks.
- Ability to work accurately & pay attention to detail.
- Ability to apply knowledge and experience to look for continual improvements/refinements to existing practices.
- Having a good standard of IT literacy (Windows and Mac OS, office and web based packages).
