Organizational setting

The World Maritime University (WMU) is a postgraduate and research university established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, the maritime agency of the United Nations. WMU offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs, postgraduate diplomas, and Professional Development Courses with the highest standards in maritime and oceans education and training.

The Professor position is located in the Faculty units at WMU’s headquarters in Malmö, Sweden.

 

Main purpose

The position works under the supervision of the Vice President Academic, and functionally with the Heads of the MSc. Specializations – Maritime Energy Management and Ocean Sustainability, Governance and Management. As a faculty member at the World Maritime University, the Professor is expected to provide teaching/mentoring and research and publication as well as promote inter-university cooperation in the marine technology field.

The Marine Technology and Innovation Chair’s focus will be consistent with, and supportive of, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal # 7 to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, Sustainable Development Goal # 9 of Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure - build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation, and Goal #14 of conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. The expertise should also include new maritime transport concepts, intelligent marine transport systems, including unmanned and autonomous ships, propulsion technology, marine technology and seafaring employment.

Work involves teaching regularly both introductory and specialty courses, mentoring PhD and M.Sc. students, serving on committees and panels, and providing service to WMU, IMO, and the maritime and oceans community. The Professor, as a Nippon Foundation (NF) Chair, will focus on Marine Technology and Innovation themes and issues that support both WMU and NF goals in this field.

Duties include engaging in the investigation and utilization of technologies to support sustainable management initiatives in such areas as undersea investigations utilizing UAV technology, propulsion and engine technologies, (marine) renewable energy technology including ocean energy, and transport systems technology, etc.) and to undertake research projects and scholarship leading to the publication of peer-reviewed articles, review articles, and scholarly books, and assisting in the development and execution of research projects and presentation of scholarly results.

As a senior member of the faculty and professional staff at WMU, the incumbent will work to keep WMU positioned as an academic institution of excellence and help advance the institution, encourage inter-university research cooperation, and build its reputation in the field of marine technology and innovation.

 

Working relationships

Internal contacts – Incumbent liaises and interacts with all faculty members on a regular basis as well as with support staff when needed.

External contacts – Incumbent liaises with the global maritime, ocean and the marine technology scientific and industry communities, research organizations, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, as well as scientific journals and publishing entities.

 

Duties, responsibilities

The selected candidate for the position of Professor in the area of Marine Technology and Innovation, should preferably have strong subject mastery/experience in the international policy framework of the maritime and oceans sectors, as well as a proven track record of research and collaboration particularly with respect to the management and policy dimensions of marine technology and innovation. Knowledge transfer and capacity building experience that relates to improving the sustainability of the maritime industry or the oceans would be an advantage.

Responsibilities

The Professors are expected, under the supervision of the Vice-President (Academic) to be engaged in the field of policy and management on marine technology and innovation, including maritime transport and renewable energy with respect to the following functions:

  • Teaching in the MSc teaching programs in Malmö, and other locations as needed and assigned,
  • mentoring of PhD and MSc students and supervision of research theses/dissertations in the marine technology field,
  • research and scholarship in the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, book chapters, etc.,
  • the development of marine technology research projects, submission of project proposals, and management of projects,
  • presentation of research findings at professional conferences and meetings,
  • involvement in distance education (e-learning) and Professional Development
  • Courses (PDCs), as required,
  • service on WMU committees and work groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, and curriculum duties.


Competencies and professional experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • fluency in spoken and written English;
  • effective communication skills in an international and diverse academic community;
  • Teaching/Mentoring/Research experience and expertise in the field of policy and management with respect to marine technology and innovation,, including on maritime transport and renewable energy;
  • Experience with PhD programme in terms of supervision/mentoring and the progression evaluation process;
  • Experience with MSc teaching programme;
  • Expertise to deliver and assist in the development and/or delivery of Professional
  • Development Courses (PDCs), Distance Education courses as a part of a coordinated approach to assigned teaching duties;
  • Ability to contribute and enhance the WMU’s academic programme and research;
  • Ability to maintain active engagement and remaining up-to-date in area of expertise,
  • including collaborating with UN agencies, marine and oceans industry partners and professional bodies.


Outreach/Engagement/Service

  • Service on Academic Council, providing service to WMU committees and work groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, curriculum and international/community outreach duties as required.

 

Research/Scholarship

  • Assist in the development of marine technology research projects, submission of project and research proposals as a member of one of WMU’s research groups.
  • Dissemination of research findings at professional conferences and technical meetings.

 

Minimum requirements – education, experience and language skills

Education

Essential

  • PhD or equivalent knowledge in the Marine Technology field, relevant to innovation in marine transport systems, ocean sustainability issues with preferred experience in higher education and training in the maritime/ocean sectors.


Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 10 years experience in teaching at the postgraduate level, preferably within the areas of marine technology, or a related field, or equivalent academic or research and development activities,
  • Experience in teaching or being engaged in the work on policy and management in the field of marine technology and innovation knowledge that advances the improved management and sustainable development of the oceans,
  • A track record in research and scholarly publication in marine technology field.


Desirable

  • Professional experience in the marine/ocean sector preferably at a management level,
  • Experience in planning and organizing field studies for students,
  • Experience in organizing conferences and seminars and fund-raising.

 

Languages

Essential

  • Fluency in spoken and written English.


Desirable

  • Knowledge of another UN language would be an advantage.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a professional/academic team.
  • Effective organizational skills to manage time and priorities in teaching and administrative duties as appropriate.
