Organizational setting

The World Maritime University (WMU) is a postgraduate and research university established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, the maritime agency of the United Nations. WMU offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs, postgraduate diplomas, and Professional Development Courses with the highest standards in maritime and oceans education and training. WMU also has a highly respected research programme supported by specialized research groups across the maritime and ocean fields.

The Professor position is located in the Faculty units at WMU’s headquarters in Malmö, Sweden.

 

Main purpose

The position works under the supervision of the Vice President Academic, and functionally with the Head of the MSc. Specialization - Ocean Sustainability, Governance and Management. As a faculty member at the World Maritime University, the Professor is expected to provide teaching/mentoring and research and publication and promote inter- university cooperation in the fisheries management, natural and social sciences and/or integrated planning and management fields.

The Sustainable Ocean Chair’s focus will be on research and teaching on global ocean policy and the relevant marine science, to be supportive of current international goals and processes such as Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction, CBD Aichi targets and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal #14 to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. In this regard, the Chair will focus equally on the three dimensions of sustainable development - environmental, social and economic - and bring a holistic perspective to society’s relationship with our coasts and oceans and their natural resources.

Work involves teaching regularly both introductory and specialty courses, mentoring PhD and M.Sc. students, serving on committees and panels, and providing service to WMU, IMO, and fisheries and related oceans community. The Professor, as a Nippon Foundation (NF) Chair, will focus on Sustainable Marine Management and Ocean Governance themes/issues that support both WMU and NF goals in this field.

Possible areas of study include a focus on sustainable fisheries and marine planning and management initiatives in such areas as - overfishing, IUU fishing, and anthropogenic impacts (including fishing) on the habitats and biodiversity of marine ecosystems to support sustainable use of the ocean. This includes area based management, science policy interface and high seas governance, etc. The Chair will undertake research projects and scholarship leading to the publication of peer-reviewed articles, review articles, and scholarly books, and assisting in the development and execution of research projects and presentation of scholarly results.

As a senior member of the faculty and professional staff at WMU, the incumbent will work to keep WMU positioned as an academic institution of excellence and help advance the institution, encourage inter-university research cooperation, and build its reputation in your field of expertise.

 

Working relationships

Internal contacts – Incumbent liaises and interacts with all faculty members on a regular basis as well as with support staff when needed.

External contacts – Incumbent liaises with UN institutions such as IMO, FAO, IOC, UNEP and the global fisheries and marine technology scientific and industry communities, research organizations, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and their aims and objectives, as well as scientific journals and publishing entities.

 

Duties, responsibilities

Within the coming months, we are seeking to fill a position as Professor in the area of Sustainable Marine Management and Ocean Governance, preferably with subject mastery/experience in the fisheries and oceans sectors, as well as a proven track record of both research and collaboration in sustainable fisheries management/natural and social science and marine planning/management, knowledge transfer and capacity building experience that relates to improving the sustainability of the oceans on a local, national, regional and global level.

Responsibilities

Professors are expected, under the supervision of the Vice-President (Academic) to be engaged in:

  • teaching, including engagement in the MSc teaching programs in Malmö, and other locations as needed and assigned,
  • mentoring of PhD and MSc students and supervision of research theses/dissertations in the sustainable marine management and marine planning fields,
  • scholarship in the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, book chapters, etc.,
  • the development of sustainable marine management and ocean governance research projects, submission of project proposals, and leadership and delivery of such projects,
  • presentation of research findings at professional conferences and meetings,
  • involvement in distance education (e-learning), professional development
  • courses (PDCs), and capacity-building programmes as required,
  • service on WMU committees and work groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, and curriculum duties.


Qualifications, competencies and professional experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • fluency in spoken and written English,
  • effective communication skills in an international and diverse academic community.


Teaching/Mentoring

  • Engagement in the PhD program at WMU Malmö in terms of supervision/mentoring and the progression evaluation process,
  • Engagement in the MSc teaching program at WMU in Malmö and other locations as needed and assigned.
  • Assist in the development and/or delivery of Professional Development Courses (PDCs) as a part of a coordinated approach to assigned teaching duties.
  • Participate in Distance Education courses in a coordinated fashion.
  • Maintain active engagement and remaining up-to-date in area of expertise, including collaborating with UN agencies, fisheries, marine and oceans industry partners and professional bodies.


Outreach/Engagement/Service

  • Service on Academic Council, providing service to WMU committees and working groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, curriculum and international/community outreach duties as required.


Research/Scholarship

  • Assist in the development of sustainable marine management and ocean governance research projects, submission of project and research proposals as a member of one of WMU’s research groups.
  • Dissemination of research findings at professional conferences and technical meetings.

 

Minimum requirements – education, experience and language skills

Education

Essential

  • PhD in the Fisheries Management/Natural or Social Science and/or and Ocean governance fields-relevant to fisheries sustainability with preferred experience in higher education and capacity-building training in the fisheries/ocean sector.


Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in teaching at the graduate level, preferably within the areas of sustainable fisheries and/or marine management, or a related field,
  • Expertise in fisheries management knowledge that advances the improved management and sustainable development of fisheries at the local, regional and global levels,
  • A track record in research and scholarly publication in sustainable fisheries and Ocean governance,
  • Experience in leading in research project management in relation to fisheries knowledge transfer (fishing methodologies and bye-catch), and in capacity building programs for developing countries.


Desirable 


  • Professional experience in the fisheries/ocean sector preferably at a management level, 

  • Experience in planning and organizing field studies for students, 

  • Experience in organizing conferences and seminars and fund-raising.

Languages


Essential 


  • Fluency in spoken and written English. 



Desirable

  • Knowledge of another UN language would be an advantage.
