Department of Engineering Operations Administration

Faculty of Engineering

He aha te mea nui o te ao, he tangata, he tangata, he tangata.

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading University. It employs over 5400 academic and professional staff to support over 41,000 students making us one of NZ’s largest employers. The Faculty of Engineering is also the country’s largest and most successful with a roll of more than 3,900 students and a strong focus on research; with large scale research activities and collaborations with other institutions and members of the industry. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Kaiārahi.

This exciting position would lead the development and execution of strategies for effective and enduring engagement with iwi and Māori and Pacific communities, schools and enterprises. It would also take a leading role in development and implementation of strategies for the recruitment, retention, success and completion of Māori and Pacific students, as well as the inclusion of Vision Mātauranga into the faculty’s research. This position also would require working with the Dean and the faculty to develop and execute plans to achieve Māori and Pacific staff equity goals, while ensuring the faculty is connected with relevant Māori and Pacific stakeholder engagement activities taking place across the University.

In addition, the person in this role will provide expert advice to the Dean and faculty staff with respect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

To be successful in this position, you would have:

  • 7 to 8 years’ experience in leadership relevant to the tertiary sector.
  • Experience and understanding of equity issues in New Zealand, especially with relation to Māori and Pacific staff and students
  • Strategy development experience in a large, complex organization. It would be an advantage if this had been done in a tertiary institution
  • 10 to 15 years’ experience of working with Māori and Pacific stakeholders – iwi, enterprises, and community groups
  • Experience relevant to the research sector is an advantage
  • In depth knowledge of principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • In depth understanding of tikanga Māori and knowledge of te reo Māori. Fluency in te reo Māori is an advantage.
  • Understanding of Pacific culture and protocols is expected.

The University is committed to meeting its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi and achieving equity outcomes for staff and students. It provides on-site early childhood education centres for babies and pre-school children; it has parental leave and flexible work policies which support a balance between work, life, family and caring responsibilities.
