The Department of Oncology at the University of Leuven is embedded in the Leuven Cancer Institute (LCI) and combines a core of basic and clinical cancer researchers at KU Leuven and the University Hospitals Leuven, one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. By creating a strong link between "bed" and "bench" and by focusing on advanced technologies, our researchers are trying to uncover critical mechanisms that underlie cancer and exploiting this innovative cancer treatments. Here we try among other things to understand the interactions between cancer cells and immune cells more in order to better enable the individual's immune system to achieve a more long-lasting anti-tumor response.The department is also responsible for education in oncology and is heavily involved in the cancer program of the Doctoral School of Biomedical Sciences. In this way, the department plays a crucial role in the training of clinicians and cancer researchers of the future.

Your Role

Research

You will launch an innovative line of research in the field of tumor immunology with translational potential and draw on this financing. You will build bridges between existing research groups in the field of tumor immunology at the University of Leuven and the UZ Leuven and facilitates the implementation of tumor immunology and immunotherapy in the hospital.  

Education

You will provide quality education in the field of oncology and tumor immunology. You will also contribute to the educational project of the faculty / university by the guidance of master's theses. You will develop your education according to the vision of the University of Leuven in activating and research based education and utilize the opportunities for educational professionalisation that the faculties offer the university.

Services

You are willing to contribute to scientific, social and internal services. KU Leuven expect enthusiastic participation in committees related to research and teaching in the Department of Oncology, the LCI, the group Biomedical Sciences and the University.

Requirements

  • You have a doctorate obtained in the (Bio) Medical Sciences or another domain that provides excellent preparation for applied research and education.
  • You have very good teaching and training skills and a relevant and strong research record. Experience abroad and a view of research funding is a plus.
  • A very good knowledge of English is a requirement.
  • The official language of the KULeuven is Dutch. If you do not know enough Dutch, KU Leuven provides a training offer that should enable you to participate in board meetings.
  • Before teaching an assignment in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to do so by Dutch knowledge required respectively, to acquire English.
