Theoretical Quantum Nanophysics
We are looking for a researcher to work with us on the investigation of quantum properties of levitated optomechanics for up to two years. The experiments with optically levitated nanoparticles are performed in our labs at Southampton.
You will work on theoretical aspects related to such experiments, including: 1) Theoretical modelling of the levitated system to further understand heating effects introduced by the trapping laser; 2) Investigation of non-linear effects of the motion of the trapped particle in order to optimize the stabilization/cooling strategies and to explore the possibilities to steer the mechanical system in non-classical motional states (such as squeezed states and entangled states); and 3) Prediction of observable effects as expected from non-standard extensions of quantum theory (including collapse models and gravity) applied to the trapped particle system - as well as to work out a strategy to distinguish from known heating/decoherence effects.
You will to be highly-motivated to work on the project and have excellent theoretical physics skills, as well as a competitive scientific track record. You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in in physics, chemistry or mathematics and expertise in at least one of the following fields of research (two would be desirable): theoretical optomechanics, collapse models, semi-classical or quantum gravity, control theory, quantum measurement theory, open quantum systems and decoherence.
**Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.
Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
Application procedure:
You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Suzanne Stone (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 4043. Please quote reference 826517WF on all correspondence.
