Established in 2003, QBI (http://www.qbi.uq.edu.au) is housed on the St Lucia campus of UQ. It is home to more than 450 staff and students, including 41 group leaders, working across a range of disciplines, who are focused on discovering the fundamental mechanisms that regulate brain development and function in health and disease. 

Over the past decade QBI has become known as one of the world's leading neuroscience research institutes. It played a key role in contributing to UQ attaining the highest possible score of 5 for neuroscience, in the 2010, 2012 and 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) reviews, one of only two universities in Australia to achieve this.

The role

The Neurula Lab is researching ways to prevent and cure neurodegenerative diseases. The work of the Neurula Lab spans the gamut from genetic studies of animal models to imaging studies of human clinical patients. We are working to understand the basic brain mechanisms that are affected by these diseases and to determine how the brain responds to therapeutic interventions. The Research Assistant role is vital to our labs research output and success and is involved in conducting experiments addressing the teams core research focus. In addition, the Research Assistant will provide support to other lab team members as directed and perform routine administrative duties facilitating the general operation of the lab. The person

Applicants should possess BSc(Hons) or equivalent; or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. In addition, experience in a range of lab techniques using animal models including stereotaxic surgery, intracranial injections, animal perfusion and brain microdissection is essential. Candidates should also have experience in the administration of the research environment including inventory and facilities management and have a proven ability to build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. You will be required to work with minimal supervision and have a focus on bringing research to completion so as to obtain publishable results.

Remuneration

This appointment will be full or part-time, (subject to negotiation) on a fixed term basis up to 12 months at HEW Level 5 or 6, with appointment commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience. The remuneration package will be in the following range:

  • HEW 5: $64,597.80 - $72,348.94 p.a. plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range of $75,579.43 - $84,648.26)
  • HEW 6: $74,207.07 - $79,964.50 p.a. plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range of $86,822.27 - $93,558.47)
