JOB PURPOSE:

The post will entail working with a large multi-disciplinary research group working on the NICOLA Study which is a large longitudinal
study of the social and biological determinants of healthy aging in Northern Ireland. The post will involve working with the study's
Operations Group, its Scientific Officer and Project Manager initially to quality assure and curate data from wave 1 of the study, to
contribute to the preparation of summary reports and designated academic outputs from the study's first wave, and to liaise with
stakeholders in order to develop plans for wave 2.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. To assist in quality assurance and curation of the first wave of NICOLA study data.
2. To develop a project plan for the delivery of the first summary reports from the study's wave 1 CAPI data, working with the
study's Scientific Officer and others in the academic reference group.
3. To assist in developing Standardised Operating Procedures for the ascertainment of key clinical events during follow-up,
including in the first instance: major cardiovascular events (coronary heart disease and stroke), cancer and dementia.
4. To assist in data harmonisation procedures to ensure NICOLA is harmonised with the Gateway to Global Aging Data Repository (http://gateway.usc.edu/).
5. To be responsible for undertaking a range of community engagement and dissemination activities including producing E-zines
about the project's progress for wide circulation around stakeholders, presenting study findings at a variety of user and policy
maker and stakeholder forums.
6. To assist the Project Manager in updating the project website.
7. To assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and reports, including the submission of the annual funders report using Researchfish.
8. To assist with the submission of associated grant applications and the supervision of doctoral students.
9. To assist with ethical and research governance procedures in relation to the NICOLA study.
10. To present regular progress reports for the research team or to external audiences to disseminate and publicise research findings.
11. To prepare, in consultation with the research team, material for publication in national and international journals and
presentations at national and international conferences.
12. To carry out routine administrative tasks associated with the research project to ensure the project is completed on time and
within budget, including organisation of project meeting and documentation, financial control, and risk assessment of research activities.
13. Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments in longitudinal studies of aging and related disciplines.

Planning and Organising:

1. To draw up a Gantt chart and plan for specific deliverables of the research project's scientific outputs.
2. To plan for the use of research resources and workshops where appropriate.
3. To plan own day-to-day activity within the framework of the agreed research programme.
4. To plan to meet deadlines for journal publications and to prepare presentations and papers for conferences.
5. Coordinate and liaise with other members of the research group regarding progress.

Resource Management Responsibilities:

1. To ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
2. To provide support and guidance as required to staff and students assisting with the research.

Internal and External Relationships:

1. To liaise on a regular basis with NICOLA colleagues, students and key stakeholders.
2. To maintain existing and establish new internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and
to form relationships for future collaboration.
3. To maintain existing and establish new external networks to share information and ideas, including relationships with external
stakeholders and with investigators from other cohorts (especially TILDA and ELSA) with whom NICOLA will work collaboratively.
4. To contribute to the School's outreach programme by maintaining existing and establishing new links with local community
groups and UKCRC Centre of Excellence partners.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. Have a PhD in a public health science such as epidemiology, medical statistics, psychology, health economics or in a discipline
in a related area of professional practice.
2. First or upper second class honours degree or equivalent related to a public health science such as epidemiology, medical
statistics, psychology, health economics or in a discipline in a related area of professional practice.
3. At least 3 years' recent research experience and skills relevant to this project e.g. experience of data analyses in
epidemiological studies with relevance to public health, in analysis of longitudinal studies or in related areas with a focus at a population level.
4. Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in research methods and techniques pertinent to epidemiology, longitudinal
studies and public health research.
5. Experience of using data analysis packages such as SPSS, STATA or MPlus.
6. Experience of management, co-ordination and analyses of epidemiological or related population/community based studies.
7. Experience of project management.
8. Proven ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment as part of a research team.
9. Good publication track record commensurate with the stage of career.
10. Experience of undertaking a range of community engagement, outreach and dissemination activities.
11. Excellent IT skills e.g. Microsoft Office suite.
12. Excellent organisational skills.
13. Excellent inter-personal skills.
14. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
15. Evidence of ability to write reports and meet deadlines.
16. Evidence of ability to deal competently with administrative tasks and contribute to broader management tasks.

20. Ability to act decisively and confidently.
21. Access to transport and willingness to travel to meet the needs of the post.
22. Ability to work outside normal hours when necessary.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. MSc in public health.
2. Experience of conducting qualitative research.
3. Knowledge of relevant public health systems and datasets.
4. Proven ability to participate in or initiate collaborative research.
5. Evidence of having co-ordinated a research project to successful completion.
6. Experience of public engagement activities and disseminating research to non-academic audiences.
7. Strong commitment to a career in research.
