JOB PURPOSE:

The postdoctoral researcher will design and run a series of in-lab and in-home usability and acceptability studies, under the
supervision of Dr. Brian Murphy (Computer Science), Dr. Bernadette McGuinness, and Prof. Peter Passmore (both at the Centre for
Public Health, & City Hospital). The studies will be used to evaluate, and inform the continuing development, of technologies to track
day-to-day cognitive health of older people (ages 40-70yrs), using tablet-based cognitive games, and EEG (“brainwave”) recording.
This project is funded for 12 months as part of a larger Innovate UK project, led by Belfast-based start-up company BrainWaveBank Ltd.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. To complete the detailed design of a usability and acceptance study, both in-lab and in-home, using a brainwave recording
device (EEG, electroencephalography) and tablet-based cognitive games.
2. To prepare documentation for ethical approval, obtain informed consent from participants, and assist with ethical and research governance procedures.
3. To undertake recruitment of participants to focus groups, in-lab testing of technologies, and an at-home study (including training
sessions, debriefing sessions, and administration of computerised neuropsychological testing).
4. To ensure adherence to project milestones and be responsible for regular production of progress reports.
5. To prepare, analyse and summarise user opinions, engagement and feedback.
6. To manage the safe and accurate identification, collection and storage of data.
7. To critically review and summarize relevant academic papers, journals and textbooks to inform details of and methods used in the study.
8. To prepare, in consultation with research team, material for technical reports and publications.
9. To carry out routine administrative tasks associated with the research project to ensure that project is completed on time and
within budget, including organisation of project meetings and documentation.

Planning and Organising:

1. To draw up and maintain a Gantt chart and plan for specific deliverables of this work package.
2. To plan own day-to-day activity within framework of the agreed research programme.
3. To plan to meet deadlines technical reports and publications.
4. To coordinate and liaise with other members of the project group regarding progress at Queen’s University and BrainWaveBank Ltd on a weekly basis.

Resource Management Responsibilities:

1. Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
2. Provide guidance as required to other project staff who may be assisting with research.

Internal and External Relationships:

1. Liaise on a regular basis with colleagues and partners in the University, at BrainWaveBank Ltd., and at external subcontractors.
2. Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. Have or be about to obtain a PhD in a relevant area of study such as Clinical Research, Experimental Cognitive Psychology, Human Factors Research.
2. At least 3 years relevant research experience (including PhD study), e.g. in the design and execution of studies on health
technologies, diagnostics or therapeutic interventions.
3. Direct research experience working with human participants.
4. Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge on quantitative and qualitative research methods and analysis pertinent to
studies with human participants.
5. Ability to contribute to broader management and administrative processes.
6. Experience of critically reviewing and summarising relevant literature.
7. Excellent IT skills e.g. Microsoft Office suite.
8. Excellent organisational skills.
9. Excellent inter-personal skills.
10. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
11. Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with experimental participants.
12. Ability to work independently and on own initiative.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. 1-2 years of postdoctoral experience.
2. Study design for clinical trials or field work.
3. Recruitment of human participants, and associated administration.
4. Writing applications and securing ethical approval.
5. Testing usability or acceptability of technologies.
6. Working with older populations.
7. Performing interviews and conducting Focus groups.
8. Statistical scripting, numerical computing (e.g. Matlab, R, Python).
9. Recording EEG or other psysiological signals.
10. Evaluating usage/acceptability of smartphone-based apps.
11. Neuropsychological testing (e.g. Cantab).
12. Ability to work across disciplinary boundaries.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position may require travel to conduct home visits with study participants from time to time.
